Psychokinesis. A South Korean Superhero film directed by Yeon Sang-ho who directed the zombie movie Train to Busan. Basically a story of a middle-age dad who develops superpowers and uses them to help his estranged daughter and her friends who are being intimidated by thugs who work for a corrupt construction company.
I could write a long description of it, but I'll just say, my wife loved it. High praise indeed from someone who thinks superhero movies are puerile. For myself I think it's probably the best Superhero film I've yet seen. |

Hangar 18 (1980)
Hangar 18
Starring Darren McGavin, Robert Vaughn, Gary Collins, James Hampton, and Pamela Bellwood. Hangar 18 (1980) - IMDb https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080836/ Hangar 18 - Full Movie - 1980 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yofp7Rv8vRk Synopsis (sourced from IMDb & Wikipedia): During a Space Shuttle mission launching a satellite, the satellite collides with a nearby unidentified flying object, killing an astronaut in the Shuttle launch bay. The UFO afterwards performs an emergency landing in the deserts of Arizona, and is brought to a secret Air Force base known as "Hangar 18" for further study by scientists. Meanwhile the White House denies the existence of the UFO (because of the near presidential elections), and a cover story is released claiming the Shuttle accident is due to the incompetence of the surviving astronauts Steve Bancroft (Gary Collins) and Lew Price (James Hampton). However Bancroft and Price (who witnessed the incident) decides to fight against the smear, and seek to uncover the truth by hunting down the UFO, which leads to both astronauts being targeted by government agents. Standard Eighties B-movies fare, but an OK way to spend Sunday morning anyway.. My only gripe was the nagging voice in my head which kept whispering to me "Capricorn One" (guess I should go see a doctor for that )

This ,
Tension packed not a genius plot yet keeps you wondering ultra low budget claustrophobic set on an isolated island , film. Concerns a couple's (Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton) attempt to recover from a personal tragedy. Yet that`s violently interrupted when a stranger washes ashore. Bringing unbelievable sounding news of an airborne fatal disease sweeping through Europe. Is the man (Jamie Bell) being honest or is he crazy ?. We satisfyingly find out in the end

It (2017)
Trailer A monster disguised as a clown gets hungry every 27 years or so and has some kids for dinner... The 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's novel It is boring and infantile Spielbergian 80s nostalgia. I guess that's closer to the truth than describing this as a horror film. The film title is definitely misleading. Stranger Things - The Movie or simply Sh-It would have been more suitable. Even the television adaptation from 1990 is far superior to this E.T./Stranger Things/Stand by Me bastard child, taking its source material much more seriously. Pennywise's "they float" speech becomes a mantra and is taken literally by the end of the film. Stephen King's book is not a literature highlight and despite the silly explanation for where It comes from, there's depth in most of the characters and everything is perfectly wrapped up in a chilling atmosphere. Psychological horror at its best. The film from 1990 has its cheesy moments and really reveals itself as a TV movie but it does channel some of the novel's creepiness, especially in the shape of Tim Curry's superb performance as Pennywise. While the new Pennywise looks closer to the book version, he's nowhere as scary as Tim Curry's. In the end, this is another shitty CGI monster film with little substance. |
