Alien Convergence (2017)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6874406/

A massive and well deserved 2/10 on imdb

Three objects crash into the Earth, all in the USA and cause major power outages, the objects are found to be monsters that leave a trail of destruction and the only thing in their way is an experimental system to power an aircraft by mind control

Loads of pretty poor CGI no real WOW scenes so one to leave till I get really bored

I see this is yet another attempt to make a sci-fi film by Asylum, perhaps one of the worst American production companies in recent history. They have a well-deserved track record of making cheap, total crap that has the look of being filmed with a handheld camcorder. So having established this, I'll give it a miss :-)

Incarnation (2016)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4588874/

A weird Serbian film, this time it is weird in the right way, Groundhog Day with bucket loads of bullets.
A man wakes up on a bench in the square of an unnamed town and finds that a group of masked killers are after him, when they kill him he wakes up on the bench again.
Each time he wakes up he tries to piece together parts of his life to discover why this is happening.

Default The 24 Hour War

Probably the best documentary film ever made about LeMans and it's history. It basically starts with some brief history, but focuses on the spat between Enzo Ferrari and Henry Ford II and then moves on toward the current day and the return of Ford in the Ford GT in 2016.

God's Own Country (2017)

Trailer

Johnny Saxby (Josh O'Connor) is a frustrated young man from Yorkshire, Northern England. While some of his peers are off to the big city, he's stuck on his parents' farm. To numb his frustrations, Johnny spends most of his free time getting drunk and having quick, passionless sex with some local men. Things might have been easier if his father Martin (Ian Hart) hadn't suffered a stroke, thus leaving Johnny to take care of the farm on his own. The relationship between father and son is strained because the former lacks confidence in his son's ability to meet his obligations. That's why he hires a Romanian migrant worker, Georghe Ionescu (Alec Secareanu), as a temp. At first Johnny is hostile towards Georghe, calling him "gypsy", but the course of their relationship changes soon and Georghe begins to make a difference in Johnny's life.

A surprisingly well-made romantic drama with emotional depth without getting sentimental. There is no coming-out story. Johnny knows what he is and what he wants. God's Own Country is about the hard life on a farm, in a small village and family relations. Johnny's homosexuality is just one aspect of the entire story.

Default California Typewriter (2017)

Watched this yesterday afternoon, and really enjoyed it. There were quite a few interesting people in it, included celebs like Tom Hanks, Sam Shepard, and John Mayer. Those that I liked the most, though, were Martin Howard, a collector, and Jeremy Mayer, an artist, along with the Permillion family and Ken Alexander, the people who have been keeping the California Typewriter company afloat. Martin collects only machines from the 1880s and 90s, and is searching for a specific model that he only finds in museums or the collections of others. Jeremy takes old typewriters apart and uses those pieces in his sculptures.

Throughout the film there is information given on the history of the typewriter, mostly by Martin, who also talks about his family's history. He mentions Christopher Latham Sholes, who invented the first practical typewriter, and how it led to the position of 'type writer girl' - a job that women held almost exclusively at the start, giving them a way to get out of low paying factory or teaching jobs.

There are scenes of of Herb Permillion and Jeremy at swap meets together looking for more machines, also one of Jeremy stopping by the shop with parts that Herb was looking for

the 2nd image is Herb, the owner and chief repairman, and the 3rd is Ken, his main assistant.

The film was very well directed, and was just about the right length, as far as I'm concerned.

Here are 3 pieces of Jeremy's art

Comedian Thom Tuck had a great series several years back where each episode focused on a different film series. He did The Olsen Twins films, Post cinematic Steven Seagal and Bollywood. The other one in the series featured Asylum films. Brilliantly funny. Here for anyone who wants a listen.

Flatliners (2017)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2039338/

A remake of the superb 1990 film, one of the original stars Keifer Sutherland appears again away from the messy end this time of the experiments this time.

A group of medical students decide to investigate life after death by getting their colleagues to stop their hearts and restart them after a short while to see if they get any clues to an after life. After the first student starts to exhibit unusual memory recall and the brain appears to have been given a jump start the others choose to stay under a little longer when it is their time.

If you are familiar with the 1990 film you will know that there is a downside to their experiment, the remake is more heavily dependent on FX and although it is a reasonable enough film it doesn't really bring much extra to the party, well maybe Ellen Page in a sports bra.
