almost universally panned but it's one of my favourite films
Just watched the trailer and it's got the same Z movie feel as The Video Dead (1987). Awesome poster btw.

Ready Player One.
Yes, it's twenty minutes too long; and it's got plot holes you could drive a road train through, but gees Spielberg can still make an entertaining blockbuster. Best video game I've never played.

Oldman brings out the extremely dark humour of his character's personality, the man's cheerful acceptance of his own wickedness and remarkably accurate assessment of the individual traits of his captors. For entirely selfish reasons which he does not bother to pass off as anything other than totally selfish, Dr Smith saves the party more than once; and to their bitter annoyance he is simply too useful to shoot, even though its all his fault they are lost in space anyway.

I reckon about 5/10 and most of that because I thought the cast was not too bad.
The entertainment value in this film is all about Dr. Smith.

This is a case of a great actor making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Jonathan Harris played Dr Smith in the television series as a Paul Lynde type closeted gay poltroon, who really should be kept away from Will Robinson, for heaven's sake, but Oldman as they say "takes the character in another direction"

Oldman finds a sinister vein in him that isn't camp, its genuinely malignant, while at the same time having some affection for the Robinsons. You can Oldman's character to Paul Reiser's corporate weasel in Aliens . . . but Oldman brings a lot more gravitas to the role.

The strange casting choice here is William Hurt, who is no kind of heroic leading man, sucks the life out of the movie.

You're definitely right there...and the hybrid version of him still gives me the creeps. Parker Posey as the latest incarnation though is the bee's knees. A totally amoral individual. It's a shame the show turned out to be rubbish.

Zootopia. Surprisingly good. Is there actually such a film genre as fluffy bunny noir?

OK so not exactly a movie but I have just bought the newly released DVD of The Mad Death (1983)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241114/

A thrilling 3 part story about a rabies outbreak after an infected cat is smuggled into the UK from France.
A frightening portrayal of the threat that thankfully never arrived here, it doesn't gloss over the terror that such an outbreak would create and how it could quietly spread across the country

Ten minutes into Pacific Rim. So far it's shaping up to be almost as bad as Independence Day.

Hey, I'd want to watch it just to see what Zita Johann is doing in something like this - it would sort of be like Laurence Olivier in a Ed Woods movie.

REVENGE

After being assaulted by 3 men,a young woman sets out to get....REVENGE !!

I was pulled in by the first frame of this film, and mesmerized until it's last.
Matilda Lutz as Jennifer is absolutely incredible in this role.It is a complete transformation of a character i saw one way,but as the film goes on and her plight plays out and her look changes my opinion of her did a complete about face.
Jennifer attempts to keep one step ahead of and hunt down the 3 men: Kevin Janssens as Richard
Vincent Colombe as Stanley and Guillaume Bouchède as Dimitri who are a combination of intimidation, brutality, and buffoonery. They were as much fun to watch as Lutz.

The film is absolutely stunningly shot.Thank you Cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert
Director Coralie Fargeat pulls out all the stops to put the audience in Jennifer's shoes...well bare feet, with trippy visuals coupled with a pulsating score by Rob.
This is a film with scenes that dwell on violence and gore definitely not for the faint of heart.

There are a few predictable moments, and some scenes of violence are over the top, almost reaching Kill Bill levels.

Still this was a mesmerizing and relentlessly involving movie.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

BREAKING IN

Shaun Russell (Gabrielle Union) and her kids Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) and Glover (Seth Carr)
go to her deceased and estranged father's home to pack things up and meet up with a real estate broker.Unfortunately they run afoul of 4 thieves who want something that's in the house.

This was basically a generic, cookie cutter thriller.Union gives it her all though and i actually liked the villains who are basically nervous, brutal, sadistic and try to have some type of control as they take on Shaun.
Billy Burke as Eddie is basically the control part of the quartet, and i think this is the first time ive seen Burke portray a villain .He's usually the smart, sarcastic and dependable character in various Sci Fi and Fantasy TV shows and films.

What kept me interested was on how Shaun and her kids were going to outsmart the thieves.
I actually thought it was pretty funny how they kept praising her with lines like:"She's Good","She's Smart",'WOW She's made it this far".

There are visual and makes no sense plotholes.Far to many inconsistent moments.
I've never seen a a dark closing shot linger so long before the credits...hilarious.

Scale of 1-10 a 5

SIDENOTE:

While watching Union in the film i really think she would be perfect as the new 2018 Kick Ass in Image comics...if they ever make a movie based on it.
