Detroit (2017)
Trailer In 1967, a police raid on an unlicensed club hosting a party for returning black Vietnam veterans ignites the notorious race riots after a number of innocent African-Americans are arrested. Mobs are starting fires and looting stores while the police keeps escalating the situation. In a city where African-Americans make up 40% of the population, 95% of the cops are white. Michigan's governor George W. Romney decides to send in the National Guard while President Lyndon B. Johnson orders the US Army paratroopers to assist. A day after the riots began, police officer Philip Krauss (Will Poulter) shoots an unarmed fleeing looter but is neither suspended nor arrested. Meanwhile, the R6B group The Dramatics is scheduled to perform in Detroit's Fox Theatre where they hope to score a record deal. But the gig is cancelled due to the state of emergency. The band's lead singer, Larry Reed (Algee Smith), and his friend Fred Temple (Jacob Latimore) rent a room in the Algiers Motel where they meet two white girls from Ohio who introduce them to their black friends, Carl Cooper (Jason Mitchell) and Aubrey Pollard (Nathan Davis jr.). After Cooper shoots a few blanks from his "toy pistol", the nearby patrolling paratroopers and cops think they're under sniper fire and surround and storm the motel which would lead to a tragedy. Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit doesn't get too deep into the actual roots of the riots and focuses too much on the Algiers Motel incident but it's still a decent effort. By the late 1960s, Detroit's economic decline was already in its advanced stage. Most of the city's white population had left for the more affluent suburbs. With the departure of the industry, Detroit was deprived of its tax revenues and jobs. Only the poorest remained and those were mainly African-American. Forced to live in terrible conditions, out of jobs and constantly harrased by a white police force, the outbreak of the 1967 riots was just a matter of time. |

I had a strange desire to watch a 50's science fiction classic so ....
When Worlds Collide (1951) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044207/ A pilot is hired to take some important documents to an astronomer, the information inside confirms that astronomers have spotted a travelling star and its orbiting planet which their calculations show is heading towards the Earth. When word gets out that the star will destroy the Earth a pair of millionaires decide to build a rocket to take them to the rogue planet in the hope of starting a new life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voW0RiNTbGI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ4yfY-tSnE

These are three movies I saw from Netflix over the past two days. The first is American Assassin starring Michael Keaton and Dylan O'Brien. Typical action flic about young O'Brien recruited by Michael Keaton a former Navy SEAL, and black ops operative to fight Islamic terrorists and hunt for a nuclear bomb which will be used for an unknown purpose. The second film It is a movie adaptation of Stephen King's horrifying novel by the same name. It is really just Part 1, Part two is being developed now. Back in 1990 there was a two part t.v. miniseries also called It with a lot of good actors that I thought was really great. This new movie version I did not like. The story is more about shock and fast images that come out at you on the screen. It does not follow the original novel as well as the older 1990 miniseries. The third film called "Mother" is totally incomprehensible. I could not understand what was happening. I had to go to Wikipedia to read the review and learned that the movie is really an allegory which is defined "as a story, poem or picture which is interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning". I would say that this film is one of the worst films that I have ever seen and the public agreed(it was given 0 stars on a scale of 0-10). |

If a fan of Emma Stone
Then ,
You might enjoy this light hearted drama. Where Jeff Daniels plays Richard a failed novelist who still talks to his childhood imaginary superhero friend, Captain Excellent. At the urging of his wife Claire, he moves to a Long Island beach community for the winter season in order to overcome his writer's block. There he meets and befriends Emma Stone. Call it light hearted since it`s not funny enough to be a comedy. The drama moments aren't that dramatic either. Both leads put in immensely likeable performances though and rise above a script that`s pretty slim pickings. If Ryan alone was in it I`d give it a one. Because he can't do much as the film isn't anywhere near as kooky quirky as the director and producer must have believed it to be. Get`s a second however for Jeff and Emma making it sort of watchable

TRAFFIK
Brea (Paula Patton) and John (Omar Epps) are a loving couple who are a bit stressed for various reasons.Their friends Darren (Laz Alonzo) and Malia (Roselyn Sanchez ) set them up with a nice, remote beautiful mansion for a romantic birthday weekend. The couple run afoul of some sinister characters, that lead them to something beyond sinister. The films message about sex trafficking shines through, some scenes were actually harrowing to watch. There are some good kill scenes and action sequences. My lust...i mean love for Paula Patton has been restored she actually does a fine job in the film.Epps got me to feel for his character a guy just trying to make his lady happy. If anyone is looking for an actor to portray an obnoxious and smug character Laz Alonzo is your go to actor.Roselyn Sanchez isnt given much to do but she's still quite stunning. There were far to many predictable moments.Characters make some of the dumbest decisions ever !! At times the movie reminded me of made for TV B movies like Nightmare In Badham County. Some scenes were just so odd and drawn out ,i dont know why the director choreographed them in such a lame and weird way. This is a rental at best Scale of 1-10 a 6 |

This past weekend my cable company allowed free access to all of the premium channels, like HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, etc., so I took full advantage. The best movie I saw was "Hidden Figures" based on the true story of a group of African-American women in the 50's and 60's who worked on the space program for NASA, calculating launch trajectories, re-entry paths, etc., all crucial to getting our astronauts out into space and back. Also saw a documentary about Bruce McLaren, race driver, engineer, and car designer, also excellent. Next was "Girl on a Train" starring Emily Blunt. Suspense thriller, a bit confusing, but fully entertaining. Two baseball movies, one called "Sugar", about a Dominican player whose life is tracked from being signed by the KC Royals, going to Iowa to play in the minors, and focuses more on how he deals with life in the US, and less to do with baseball. The other was "Undrafted" , about Adult Amateur Baseball, which is thriving in the US. I played in such leagues for 17 years, and it was the finest experience of my adult life, since I've never been a parent. The movie is predictable and at times way over the top, but still fun. I also watched "Office Christmas Party" with Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Kate McKinnon, and T. J. Miller. Again predictable, but mostly fun. For those of you who are fans of real American country music, seek out an 8-episode series called "Tales from the Tour Bus." Made by Mike Judge, of "Beavis and Butthead" and "King of the Hill" fame. This series features both live action and animation with true stories about Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, Johnny Paycheck, and others. Great stuff, not to be missed.

After an ant home invasion last year and a minor one last week I'm now tempting fate with
Phase IV (1974) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070531/ After some unstated global event scientists find that different species of ants have started to communicate with each other and to work against mankind starting with the inhabitants of a small research station. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuhgBvOWb_k

A Man Called Ove. A great Swedish movie about an isolated, grumpy old coot who is forced to re-enage with life when a boisterous young family move in next door. Heartwarming without being sickly sweet.

15-year-old Norwegian teen (Helene Bergsholm) is eager to explore her budding sexuality, but her encounter with the school heartthrob makes her a social outcast. ignore the ' porn ' title - this is actually bloody good to watch - "Turn Me On, Dammit!" is a rarity Swedish - and above all a wonderful comedy about a teenage girl's budding sexuality, treated with wit and kindness. |
