The Horror Show aka House 3

IMDB
YouTube Trailer

Detective Lucas McCarthy finally catches mass murderer Max Jenke, who killed over 100 people and watches his execution. Before dying, Jenke swears Lucas he'll be back to haunt him. Max has made a deal with the devil in order to return from the grave and frame Lucas for a series of grisly murders. Lucas' only hope of stopping the killer for good is to destroy his spirit before Max destroys his life and family.

The Horror Show was originally intended to be the third chapter in the House franchise, started in '86 by Sean Cunningham. But MGM decided to change the script and the previous director in order to start something new. So the movie was called The Horror Show instead of House 3. It's not a bad thing actually because this one doesn't share many similarities with the other House flick, which were more "soft horror". THS is dark and gritty. Gorier too.
The movie was relesed in 1989, the same year than Shocker and The First Power, 2 other movies about dead serial killer executed and coming back for revenge.
Despite his good cast featuring Lance Henriksen & Brion James as the cop and the monster, a good direction from the late James Isaac and some funny ideas in the script, The Horror Show has some major flaws. The movie's has a hard time to really be interesting. Max Jenke is an impressive killer but his trick from beyond make him look like a clone of Freddy. Also, the body count is very low. The movie has been recut in order to avoid an X for violence and the result is obvious. There's a lack of horror in The Horror Show! And a lack of fast pace too. Jenke gives hallucinations to his victim Lucas, who's on the verge of madness but try to maintain his reason clear. So the film is a compilation of jump scares and there are too many scenes where people are going to the basement, in Jenke's lair, and almost nothing happens. And the script can be very stupid from time to time.
The Horror Show is your usual B-grade horror from the late 80s. James & Henriksen do their best and are the main attraction here. The movie itself isn't a turkey but constantly hesitates between horror and comedy, between cruelty and the fear of censorship and in the same vein, Shocker or The First Power are far more interesting and entertaining. 5/10.

Arrival (2016)

Trailer

Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a renowned linguist, is having a hard time accepting her young daughter's death. During a lecture, only a few students show up but are distracted by an outside event. One of them asks Dr. Banks to turn on the TV for some breaking news: twelve alien spacecraft are hovering above twelve locations across the planet. Louise is visited by Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) who recruits her and the physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), taking them to Montana to establish communication with the seven-limbed aliens ("heptapods"). The visitors use circular symbols which are interpreted as their writing system but the translations differ from country to country and make misunderstandings inevitable. When one of the symbols is translated as "offer weapon", the Chinese interpret it as "use weapon" and believe the aliens have come with hostile intentions, trying to play the Earth's nations against each other before making their move. While deciphering the alien symbols, Louise begins to experience visions of her daughter which eventually helps her understand the reason for the Arrival.

An overall decent film that missed to exploit its full potential. The visual representation of the aliens is a bit silly but I enjoyed Arrival much more than Blade Runner 2049.

BLACK PANTHER

Taking place right after the events of Captain America: Civil War T'Challa / Black Panther
takes the throne as king of Wakanda, but being king comes with a set of challenges and unforseen circumstances.

Director/writer Ryan Coogler and writer Joe Robert Cole have crafted a compelling story coupled with a super hero movie.
A story that includes betrayal, loyalty, familial and tribal turmoil, and secrets that can alter a family and kingdom.
While not being preachy the film gets it's points across about racism, but it's also a celebration of black culture.
The cast : Chadwick Boseman,Michael B. Jordan,Lupita Nyong'O,Danai Gurira,Daniel Kaluuya,
Letitia Wright,Winston Duke,Angela Bassett,Andy Serkis, Forest Whitaker and Martin Freeman
all bring something to the table. There is a joy and intensity to their performances that drew me to each of them.It made me invest in them.
We are presented with a villain Michael B. Jordan as N'Jadaka / Erik "Killmonger" Stevens in which when you look at the foundation of the character you understand his motivations, but disagree with the path he takes.
I loved how the film displayed the strength of love for country and family.
The action sequences were stunning, the tribal challenges were intense and drove me to the edge of my seat.
There are great points about personal responsibility. How much can you give to the world and still be true to yourself and your countrymen? Should i remain isolated or help my fellow man?
The film is visually stunning great costume design from Ruth Carter.Along with good touches of humor and words and moments that definitely struck a few emotional chords.

My only problems with the film the CGI was off in a few sequences and there were a few predictable moments.

The film breezes by i definitely didnt feel the films 2 hour and 20 minute running time.

In the end i felt i got a sleek and involving super hero film, but also a message about sincerity and genuinely wanting to unite people. It's the kind of positivity we all desperately need right now.

So rejoice and enjoy Black Panther because this type of film making we dont see often.

Scale of 1-10 a 9

Just got the entire MCU universe feature films all on Blu-Ray and am starting a marathon over the next few days as Thor Ragnarok is due out soon and if I time it right it will fit in nicely.

Starting with the sheer brilliance of the film that started the whole MCU off

Iron Man (2008)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/

An updated version of the 60's Iron Man origin story which sees billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) injured in an attack on his armed escort in Afghanistan (as the new Vietnam), he is forced to work for his attackers as shrapnel works its way towards his heart, aided by a fellow captive he agrees to build a missile for his captors whilst secretly constructing a suit made of metal and looking like the original grey outfit. Nice working in of a Mandarin reference early on with The Ten Rings.

After escaping from his captors he returns home to find one time business colleague Obadiah Stane has taken over Stark Industries then the fun really begins There's also the first appearance of SHIELD's Phil Coulson

Safety Not Guaranteed. A sort of sci-fi about someone recruiting an assistant to go time travelling with; although the time travelling bit, while central to the story is only one part of what's going on. A really warm tale about people.

The Incredible Hulk (2008)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800080/

The brief flashback scenes in the opening credits pretty much summarise the events leading up to the origin of The Hulk and his escape from the USA, Edward Norton is Bruce Banner now holed up on Brazil doing his best to keep his anger down to prevent the change, however despite his continued efforts to find a cure he is caught between some local thugs and the US military led by General Thunderbolt Ross and changes into the Hulk.
The US military have enrolled the help of expert Emil Blonsky (longtime fans will know that name), Ross hints that they still have an ongoing super-soldier programme and that Banner's experiments unknown to him were a part of that programme.
Banner heads back to the US to try to get help from his former lover and Betty Ross who also happens to be General Ross's daughter Betty (Liv Tyler).

When Blonsky volunteers to be given the super soldier serum he tries to fight the Hulk on his own but when exposure to Banner's gamma radiative blood turns him into the Abomination things get really interesting.

Features a great cameo from Lou Ferrigno "You are The Man!" and a brief appearance by Stan Lee as well as lots of nods towards the comic's long history in print and on TV

Whatever happened to The Abomination here?

MCU marathon part 3 and a quick return for Tony Stark

Iron Man 2 (2010)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228705/

There's a lot to like about this film, another brilliant performance by Robert Downey jr. along with loads of action accompanied by a great soundtrack. it's all going great for Tony until he hears that the palladium powered device that protects his heart is slowly killing him.
I have to say that I have never really been a fan of Whiplash and the choice of villain was a definite minus point for me here, now Anton Vanko who was the first Crimson Dynamo would have been a far better choice.

The only plus point about Whiplash is that he livens up the otherwise boring annual Monaco Grand Prix

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoohRoVA9WQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbH2CPSsbyA

It also features the first MCU appearance of Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow in costume and Samuel L Jackson's first full appearance as Nick Fury

Stark's business rival Justin Hammer helps free Vanko in order to get his revenge although it might have been a bit cheaper just to keep him plied with alocohol

MCU part 4

After seeing the hammer buried in the crater in New Mexico you just knew what the next chapter would be

Thor (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800369/

One of my favourite films, let alone MCU films with a fantastic cast led by Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki a heady dose of Norse mythology, with a host of Asgardian gods led by Odin (Anthony Hopkins), the first appearance of agent Barton (Hawkeye)

The use of The Destroyer was a great idea as it first laid waste to the Frost Giants as they attack Asgard and although The Warriors Three didn't grab my attention straight away they grew on me as the series developed.

Thor is banished to Earth after Loki mischievously prompts him into taking the fight to the Frost Giants homeland and incurring Odin's wrath, on Earth he finds that Loki has sent The Destroyer after him threatening his new found friends
