It's funny how things were "back then" compared to now with regard to the mag-buying mission - more so today with my latest Club-hunt which has left me rather flat and wanting to dig out an issue from twenty years ago.

My usual newsie seemed to be flat out of PRP mags - and in more hope than anything else I tried my second alternative. Nada - in fact the only PRP mag I saw was a Mayfair special published a few weeks ago. So onto my third newsagent - nothing there either, prompting me to think that PRP might have suddenly gone bust. Hope had given way to desperation, and I drove to another high street I had never stopped at before to check out what they had there.

Et Voila, a sealed copy of Club Vol. 39 No. 11 complete with shitty rip-off DVD that took the price up to £4.80. So desperate was I to just get the thing paid for, I couldn't care less about looking out for old ladies skulking behind the cards and gifts rack. Nor did I care about the having to hand over the magazine to the middle-aged woman behind the counter. As she struggled to shift the CD that was floating about in the transparent wrapping to read the price, I just dug out a fiver.

Change received, a quick thank you, back in the car. An experience far from that of my nineteen year old self two decades ago. In fact, it can be described as the experience of a jaded mag-buying veteran.

Unfortunately, the experience on getting back home - other half was out for the afternoon - was also far from 1990. The first girl was pretty enough but had a ghastly tattoo on her arm. The second chick had a nasty tattoo on her THIGH and, to boot, some very obvious fake tits. The third, new regular girl Sasha, just doesn't do anything for me with her own pair of fakies. Then the otherwise cute blonde centrefold, with more unsightly body art, this time above her bald pussy.

Anetta Keys (whose tattoo was mercifully not seen in any of the photos) and what would otherwise have been a fairly ordinary "sapphic" set saved the mag from being a complete disaster.

Needless to say I was not in the mood for a wank.

I subscribe to prp mags Sharky, but I rarely knock one out over them. As you say the girls are fake and covered in tats. Mayfair I like because of the lingerie content, but still fake boobs. Thank god for VEF were we can relive our youth

Sad, isn't it? I still collect Club, though more out of my semi-OCD desire to keep the collection going rather than the frisson of excitement I used to get even five years ago. I don't think I have knocked one out over a PRP mag either since Sophie Moone made her last appearance. That said, many of the older issues I have, particularly those from the early 1990s, still get things hard down there.

Next month's issue preview has Blue Angel in it, a favourite of mine that I know has natural breasts and no tattoos. It's the only thing stopping me from calling time. That said, I may draw a line under it when this current volume finishes - for me, the installation of fake-mammed Sasha as the regular girl has just sapped my love for the mag, the quality of which has plummeted under the new editor.

If Club has got this bad and even grand old Mayfair has fake-titted dolls, I can only imagine what the contents of Men Only and Men's World are like.

I felt Mayfair went badly downhill after the PRP takeover - although to be fair, it had been going a little that way by itself for several years before. Tacky and too much Page 3-type content. I actually switched to Club in the early 90s, even though it's also PRP and was a little harder, I thought it had a bit more class, and the girls were better-looking. But then the shaving and cliché porn-poses started to take over there too. I gave up on printed porn entirely when I got my first decent web connection in about '98, and thought I would never see the sort of stuff I *really* liked again - until I found this place!

I honestly think they would do better to go back to that classic 70s top shelf style - they can't ever compete with the net for outright porn so why not give buyers a reason to actually want a proper printed magazine? The feeling you got from turning those glossy pages with their unique smell (which I can still clearly remember!) is something you can never get from a computer screen. Not that I could risk having a proper mag in the house again these days, I don't think...

I subscribe out of habit. I'm a girly mag collector but there are very few models these days that make me hard Sophie Moone was the last great Club girl, she gives me a hard-on anytime. And Sandy of course. Little things make a difference; shoes, lingerie, make up. All they do is print porn stars these days.

I think I have told you al that I started buying them when I was away from home. I would walk about 2 miles to a quite part of Newcastle and hand over the readies and grab and run. In those days I was counting the days until the next Men Only.

One day I was going to the kitchen in the residence where I was living at the time and in the kitchen bin was about a years worth of porn, everything from P3enth0use, Mayfair, Knave, plus some speciality stuff that could only come from licenced shops or from the ships at the quayside. I grabbed about 5 assorted Penthouse and Knave and raced back to my room, there were still maybe 30 or 40 left in the kitchen, the bin was a dustbin absolutely full, must have taken the guy all night to move them. I calmed down after stashing them and then went back for more.......they had gone...everylast one of them....how in h3ll had someone shifted what must have been 30 mags in such short time?

Years later I moved back to live my parents for 2 years whist I was saving up to get married, my fiancee lived 100 miles away and I only saw her once a month. I had a car then and I used to buy my mags at Asian Newsagents in other cities.

In those days I was earning and so It was Men Only, Club, Mens World, Model Directory, Mayfair, what ever looked to have the best cover. I used to buy just two at a time...I didnt want to look like a gld medal w@nker.

And then many years later we started getting mag packs of dated mags maybe 6 months old, they cost about £6 and were covered so you didnt know what was inside....here I discovered the harder US mags....Hustler Gold, Cheri, Swank, Velvet, Genesis, Gent, and many more. We were even getting an odd spannish mag (pictures looked good) and a couple of Ozzie mags with more revealing shots of Stepanie Rage and Stephanie Adams, real porn stars and not just softcore girls.

I stopped bying mags when I got broadband back in about 1998
