The BBC has been defiant and intransigent about the Cliff Richard case, even submitting it's wholly unethical reporatge for a TV award. Quite rightly, the judge added aggravated damages to the base award specifically citing the entry of the footage into a TV award contest, because this showed a total absence of shame, a non-recognition of any wrong doing.

There was a mealy mouthed token expression of regret, in which a BBC person stated that in retrospect there were things which they would have done differently, but then went on to complain about how the judgment ties their hands when they would like to report a story naming names about someone who has not yet been charged with an offence. I mean, hello? And this is a problem because...?

The Cliff Richard incident was disgraceful. If I were the current Director General I would dock £210K straight out of the BBC News budget, not this one year only, but permanently and forever as a reduction in their annual budget, and leave it to the journalists to work out what gets cut.

Actually there is no reason the BBC (ie the taxpayer) should pay a penny. The fault is with the BBC executives who thought this a Scoop. They should pay.

No charges were ever brought against the 77-year-old and he was today awarded £210,000 in damages. The corporation could be left with a bill of up to £5million after the case dragged on for so long.

It's going to cost South Yorkshire police nearly half a million.
Presumably for the scale of the "raid", and for inviting the beeb along to film it.

Not so.

The answer is to follow professional standards. If you don't, you get things like this.

A lot of people who persistently failed to investigate the likes of Savile, and who hid from view when called upon to investigate contentious cases such as the Asian Muslim nonce gangs in various British cities are also going to suffer for it. Failing to investigate will be just as professionally damaging as investigating in a sensationalist and unprofessional manner; so neglect of duty will not be the safe option either.

The final cost will undoubtedly be some way beyond the 5 million mark.

Here is an interesting article on a murder defendant who wishes to show his penis to the jury. He is on trial for choking his "victim" with his hands, he claims she choked on his penis. Apparently the district attorney wants his penis to be erect - ? https://www.miamiherald.com/news/loc...151010697.html
As we say, only in Florida.

Some are claiming the evidence won't stand up in court. LOL

Ah, Florida!

Proof that while the state may still be too small to be a republic, it is not too large to be an insane asylum.
