Default Reading Terminal Market update.............

OK. As fate would have it, I had the opportunity on two consecutive Saturdays to return to the Reading Terminal Market for the first time in a year.

Some things have changed. The old beer garden is gone, replaced by a more upscale Molly Malloy's serving 32 different beers. Sadly Delilah's is gone, made famous by their Seven Cheese Macaroni and Cheese. So is Ochs', long the home of the man who saved the market from the wrecking ball. But many of the old favorites are still there such as Beiler's Bakery with their wonderful Amish goods, Iovine's Produce, the Termini Brothers Bakery, and my personal favorite, The Dutch Eating Place. There is more seating, which is a good thing, and overall the market has not lost it's charm. Somehow they have managed to keep the small bookstore in the back of the market, along with the gent who runs an old style shoeshine parlor. I was glad to see that with all the modernization that there was still room to keep the little guys.

One welcome addition is Beck's Cajun Cafe. To be blunt, you CANNOT get decent Creole or Cajun cuisine farther north than the state of Maryland, IMHO. It's almost non-existant in the New York/New Jersey area. So I was anxious to try Beck's out and see if they upheld the honor of Louisiana cuisine.

I have to say YES. Fortunately, Beck's gives out samples. Their Red Beans knocked me out, and made up my mind where I wanted to eat that day. Their Crab and Crawfish Jambalaya was equally superb. Maybe not seasoned to my level, but certain up to standard.

My wife and I ordered Po' boy sandwiches: her's was Creole chicken, mine was catfish. Flavor wise, it was good, though I thought the Creole mayonnaise needed a bit more seasoning. However, with a bottle of Tabasco sauce, along with Beck's house brand hot sauce and seasonings within in reach I certainly could've remedied that if I truly felt a need to. My biggest issue with my sandwich was that they used catfish nuggets instead of fillets. No issue taste wise, but periodically I had to stuff a nugget back into the rear end of the sandwich. But overall, I am very happy that there is somewhere I can go for a taste of authentic Creole/Cajun food !

On the following weekend the wife was going to be away. So naturally I planned for a weekend of wine, women, and debauchery......... NOT ! I decided to take my best friend and his Mom to the Market. They had never been there, and I thought they'd enjoy themselves, which they did.

The week before I noticed the HUGE lines surrounding Tommy Di Nic's. Almost everyone has heard of or eaten a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. But the big noise in Philly these days is the Italian Pulled Pork Sandwich. And this is the big star at Di Nic's. I had to try it. OH MAN. I was almost crying tears of joy.

If you visit the Southern United States a pulled pork sandwich is inevitably made with barbeque sauce. Not so at Di Nic's. The pork is seasoned, marinated and slow cooked in it's own juices so that it practically melts in your mouth. It is piled high into a roll, along with some tangy Parmesan cheese. On top of the meat is a helping of broccoli rabe, which tasted like it was sauteed in garlic. Add to it a touch of horseradish for a little zest and there you have it. At $8.95 you get a generously sized sandwich. What a fabulous mix of flavors. Well worth the wait !

As I mentioned, the Market offers $4 parking in the garage across the street, if you spend at least $10 (easy) and stay only two hours (difficult). But the wife and I found a parking garage several blocks away on 15th and Vine with $5 parking all day Saturday. That made the trip even sweeter !

OK salad dodgers time to fess up to one and all. I bought and ate a family sized pack of cheesy footballs on Thursday night. On Tuesday I went into the Happy Garden Chinese and bought two pineapple friters at lunchtime. That lot is 100% junk. But i'd gotten fed up with my strict Drs diet.

So let battle commence

Copied from the web:

Jacob’s Cheese Footballs

Jacob’s Cheese Footballs are small round savories measuring about 1.5 cm/0.6 in in diameter, and are probably not made in Shropshire. The box describes them as ‘light & crispy wafers with a soft cheesy centre’ which is about right. The cheese filling is quite salty and creamy, more like a cheese spread than cheese as such, but quite nice; reminds me of Christmas snacks we used to get when I was a kiddie.

Will be in Philly next weekend and already had the Market on the intinerary. Some places in Philly give you the choice of spinach instead of broccoli on the roast pork, I can never decide so I end getting 1 of each. Feel like a log a few hours later, but damn thats some good eating.

More than a Legend BB, , a real role model for all real blokes who need to be a pig and make a pig of themselves. If I had a son, I'd force him to watch Adam and learn great things
