The preliminary election results look as follows: the social democrats claim "victory", getting 26,2% of the votes. I wouldn't call that a victory with the Sweden Democrats being very close to 20%. The block composed of the social democrats, greens and the Left Party get 39,4% while the liberal-conservative coalition arrives at 39,6%.

It has also fostered valuable principles such as justice, democracy and the rule of law. It has created circumstances and infrastructure to allow scientific and medical advances. At its best it can be kind, concerned and charitable.

But like all cultures from anywhere throughout history it is limited by the capacity of human beings to live up to its ideals.

Given that, perhaps extoling us to unite might be a bad idea. We might make an even bigger mess of it.

The family of the victim and the media needs to stop making this about a white on black crime, more specifically a white police officer on a black man crime.

Let the investigators and the prosecutors and the court system figure it out based on facts and evidence and not on hearsay, speculations and social media rumours.

If she is found not guilty by a trial of her peers, so be it.

For contemporaneous state of mind - a tweet is a kind of evidence you just didn’t get previously, unless someone happened to keep a very detailed diary. And how many murderers have turned out to have browser histories that included visits to odd corners of the internet where “how to get away with it” was discussed.

It got much less attention than the Skripal poisoning, but the NYPD made a case against gang members who dragged a boy out of a Bronx bodega and stabbed him to death, based almost entirely on surveillance video. Without the video, you’d have been looking at canvassing a community, trying to find someone willing to drop a dime on a notoriously vengeful gang.
