Home Alone (1990)
The Shining (1980) The Haunting (1963) Planes, Trains & Auto-mobiles (1987) Not Christmas classics by any measure, but they're my regular feel-good movies for Christmas |

Another vote for the Alistair Sim version of "A Christmas Carol" but absolutely NOT the colourised version. A secondary vote for the animated version from the early 70s (Richard Williams?) which also featured Sim. The BBC used to show it every year, and in best tradition of a tradition ( ) still should. IAWL stands alone; I never tire of it. It is one of his best performances - see where he snaps at the kids. Scrooged I like - when I saw it in the cinema Murray does that "lead a singalong" behind the end credits.. "Now the women... now the men - the REAL men.." I was the only person left.
I was pressed into watching "The Muppet Christmas Carol" one year - glad I was. Now, in our house there are also films "you have to watch at Christmas" even if not Christmassy per se. One is Casablanca; in recent years we added The Artist too. Even my grumpy uncle liked it. Oh all right, add Die Hard to the list. Not least because my Mum (this is the first Christmas without her) loved Vaughan Monroe - whose version of "Let It Snow" is the end titles music. |

Rare Exports: A Christmas tale
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_E...Christmas_Tale Bear with me... Santa is actually an ancient demon buried under a Russian mountain near the Finnish border & when a drilling operation threatens to release him saving the world is down to a young Finnish boy, his reindeer farmer father & his fathers buddies. This is the perfect antidote to the usual Xmas movies that are so sickly I think they're the reason I'm diabetic! |
