For anyone from or vsiting the UK, if in Cumbria try and visit the Laurel & Hardy museum in Ulverston (Stan Laurels Birthplace). I cant reccomend this place highly enough, it is packed with memorabilia from right throught their career and also has a room converted to a tiny cinema which shows constant L & H loops.
www.laurel-and-hardy.co.uk I promise you wont be disapointed.

On a connected note - It's never been confirmed but the family legend is that Jimmy Finlayson (the little bald Scottish guy who appeared in so many L&H movies & was apparently the inspiration for Homer Simpson's "D'oh!") was my grandfather's cousin. So we always called them "Uncle Jimmy" films. |

There are so many great L & H films it is difficult to isolate just one. However Towed In The Hole, and the Music Box are both in my top five but perhaps the best one for me is the Picnic. L & H and taking their wives and one other relation who is suffering from gout, plus a small dog, on a picnic. However flat tyres, an aggressive dog who appears to like the taste of bandages and a disagreement with their neighbours thwart their best laid plans. Hysterical.

Last night I watched Them Thar Hills (another of my favourites)
In this one Olly needs to recuperate so the boys hire a trailer caravan and head to them thar hills. They find the perfect idyllic campspot and set about making coffee and drinking from the well with the wonderful tasting water, little do they know that the well has been topped up with illegal whiskey by bootleggers (Ollie ever the know-it-all, "its the iron in it that gives it that flavour"). and before long they are pretty much drunk. Along comes a young couple and they run out of petrol, the guy leaves his wife with the boys while he goes off to buy some, and before long the boys (innocently) have the wife pretty drunk as well. The man (Charlie Hall) comes back and is furious that the boys have gotten his wife pissed. Now the destruction starts. After the initial arguing, the man starts to destroy the caravan and the boys destroy the mans car systematically and it all ends with the well exploding. Good, timeless, hillarious fun.

I find any time Laurel does the impossible is the funniest for me. When he lights his thumb and uses his other hand as a pipe, or when he is on one end of a 20 foot board and as the other end of the board passes by there is no one there, meanwhile Ollie looks at the camera thinking "What the hell?"
On another note someone asked about the music of L&H. Well an english musician put together just that. I have the CD around here some where and will post it when I find it. And finally, for those not aware, there is a 21 DVD box set available to those willing to pay the money. Its about 80% of the movies the boys made. Its pretty funny watching the same movie done 2 or 3 times with the boys actually speaking German or French. |

Laurel and Hardy
Them Thar Hills has a sort of sequel. Many years later the boys open an electrical shop and the shop next door is run by the guy and wife who appear in Them Thar Hills.
Naturally it descends into going from one shop to the other systamatically smashing things up until both shops are wrecked. I love the tit for tat way that each of them just follows the other into their shops and just stands and watches as the damage gets progressively worse. They all make no attempt to stop the other person. Last night I watched Dirty Work, where the boys are chimney sweeps. The butler has some classic lines and delivered with a deadpan face in such a put down manner. Examples are when asked where the fireplace was he says " You'll find it in the drawing room standing against the wall " And his last line after the boys have wrecked the room " Somewhere an electric chair is waiting " Tonight I think it'll be Our Wives where Stan helps Ollie elope with his overweight fiance. Naturally the car he gets is totally unsuitable. Sheer genius. |

What's the one where Stan is found in a trench in France unaware that the Great war is over?He comes back to Ollie's state of the art appartment which is soon destroyed.
