Default Post "removed" mystery

Every now and then when I check the "reputation received" list in the User Control page, I see a "removed by - - -" notation.

There is never any explanation for why the post was removed. Would help to know the reason so that I don't repeat the same offense again some time. Maybe in a PM to me?

Everybody who posts get's a few removed, you can usually work out why your post was removed if you read the rules, they can vary from section to section.

If you are truly perplexed, a polite PM to the mod concerned will probably get you the answer.

As a rule they don't normally PM people whose posts they remove, unless you've been very naughty.

I would venture the guess that every member who is not or never has been a moderator and has had a post deleted has wondered why and thought exactly as you are now. I certainly did when I noticed it had happened to me.

Moderating is a very time consuming job, and contrary to belief, they aren't paid for their time and efforts. Moderator's do it for the personal satisfaction in knowing their efforts help the forum to be the best it can be. Even Max Joker, (don't believe him, he isn't payed a million dollar salary for his work here). If you can't even hazard a guess as to why it was removed, I'd suggest looking at the list of moderators for that particular area of the forum, you can see their user names displayed at the bottom of that particular general topics page, and send them a polite private message asking why. My experience is that one of them will eventually get back to you explaining why it was most likely deleted.

The important thing is to realize that it's not personal and they felt there was a valid reason for it's deletion.

I guess the point (which I should have stated) is that the notation doesn't even tell me which post was removed, and there doesn't seem to be any way to find out. When I click on the link in the notation, it just comes up as invalid or not available.

If I could tell which post was removed, then yes, it would at least be a clue as to the reason.

Is there any way to tell which post was removed?

I don't think there is, once a post is deleted, it's gone. When it has happened to me, it's usually a recent post, so I'll have an idea where and what I posted, giving me an idea why it was deleted.

Happened to me this morning actually.

If you have no idea where you posted, let alone what you posted, don't worry about it, like rotobott said, if it was very naughty they'd make sure to give you a warning not to do it again.

If it wasn't a recent post, chances are it was a post where the links, images etc, have died and they were cleaning it up, just gave you a thanks in appreciation while they were doing it.

The 'removed' note comes up sometimes when I have not posted anything new in a while. If it's because of a dead link, it would be good to know which post was deleted in case I care to re-post with a new link.
Oh well, I get it it. Too bad though.
I'll stop whining about it now...

The members' replies here are pretty much spot-on. I must admit I rarely send a message when I remove a post. I usually only do that when I notice a repetitive mistake and I want this posting habit to be curtailed.

There are many reasons to remove a post and they're largely subjective. Rule violations are an obvious reason but most of the threads undergo a periodic cleaning. Posts may be removed which are redundant, outdated, have dead links, etc. If a post was removed for some rule violation a message is normally sent so it seems you're in the clear.

I've been an active member for a long time and I can tell you I was completely unaware of how much work goes on behind the scenes when I became a Mod. There's just no way to send a message for every routine removal.

We know it can lead to frustration, but like PepperII sais, we simply don't have the manpower to explain it on every post.
We hope you understand.

In the few times this has happened to me the considered mod never failed to answer my request about what and why something was deleted

It would be handy though to see automatically what posts are removed for sometimes updating/re-upping them would be no big deal (ie in case of dead links).
