Same here for me and my wife. Both born in LBZ...

I find California both interesting and strange. My friend call California the land of fruits and nuts. They maybe right.

But I’m a bit embarrassed, I’ve visited maybe 60% of this vast state. It’s very large indeed. But I would say, you meet all types of humanity here, positive folks, and the truly crazy folks. There are so many counties represented in this state. Yet we all work together.

Yes sometimes I feel we’re Taxed to death, but yet I’m still here. Is California perfect? Hell no.

Oh for the Jersey Girl, I’ve been in NJ... and I know why they called it the Garden State. It is beautiful!

Speaking of weird Californians my Geography professor explained them this way: The first settlements were on the East Coast. If a newcomer couldn't cut it in Virginia or New England he went into the Ohio Valley. If he couldn't cut it there he headed further west. Some gun loving types ended up in Texas where they thrived despite many being killed. Others tried the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains and if they couldn't cut it in those regions they headed for California. The climate there was great for sitting around and being creative which was perfect for entertainers, hippie types, gays (who weren't wanted anywhere else) and nerd math types who wanted to go to the Moon. Okies showed up because their farmland blew away and somebody needed to pick the crops. They brought along Buck Owens and Merle Haggard singing them country songs. Voila! Modern California.

One hell of a history lesson.

What's hard about it?

We don't actually _need_ anything like the volume of meat we're eating-- in fact its terrible for us, health wise. Factory farming, industrial meatpacking -- its good if you like cheap burgers but its not remotely essential.

We cooked up some "Impossible Burgers" on the grill the other night, and I gotta say-- they were terrific. Not as good as the _best_ ground beef burgers I've had, but better than average.

The US at this point grows millions of acres of corn and soy to feed to hogs, cattle and chicken, incredibly inefficient. There's no particular reason we can't move to less meat and more veg . . . would be better for everyone and everything.

The US is very good at industrial agriculture, and there's every reason to prefer a future with fewer giant herds of cattle and more innovative ways of producing a burger.

Any references to someone living there and the Jersey Devil are long time urban legends. The absolute biggest risk you can take in New Jersey or anywhere else is messing with a lifelong Jersey girl. To be clear, that is not another urban legend in any way.
