Magazine covers: eyes on stalks

A lovely. thought-provoking thread! Just reading Sharkhunter's intro post makes me feel a bit wistful for a world now seemingly lost in history.

No doubt that the top shelf world is a generation thing- a time when fabulous titillation was less accessible....and subsequently more of a treasured ritual!

I'll condense my ultimate 'eyes on stalks' moments to two Mayfair magazines.

The first one was 27-02 in 1992: -



"I'm peeling off my panties inside' says page 3 girl Tracey Harper....I remember thinking at the time these were the most thrillingly erotic words I'd ever seen printed!
Tracey was indeed mainly known to me at that time as a page 3 girl....my goodness, the heart-thumping prospect of seeing a page 3 girl 'revealing all' for the first time...it's something I still believe cannot be bettered!

Inside (of course) was bliss, as if Tracey personally was seducing me into her wonderful world of being lovely AND naughty!

A ridiculously sexy shot with an astonishingly seductive facial expression.

Then, the pure drama of the 'big reveal'..

I STILL find this such an erotic and almost mystical pussy shot- an incredible turn-on!


Next, a few years down the line....and along comes the beautiful Janie Stephens/ Dickens in 31-07.



Again, this was primal! I already knew of the gorgeous, gorgeous Janie, so this was something to really look forward to.

This set will probably never be matched (in my mind at least) for 'pressing that button'.



Janie looks unbelievable....a heady mix of looking so sweet...yet so naughty as the same time. The tone was set in that sexy cover shot. I love everything about this...especially what she's wearing.....just drives me to distraction!


And yes, sweet Janie is also the smouldering seductress- beautiful girl on a bed, legs apart, black stockings....I still sigh...and STILL she teases!

I still try to re-capture the thrill of this via fantasy 're-enactments'! The theme remains the timeless, classic 'nice girl turns naughty'.

Brooke Bond is probably my dream glamour model of the 'modern' era (i.e. last 10 years)....what probably makes her so devastating is that she was actually very shy about going even topless- a fleeting summer season of newspaper appearances seemed to be the only time she even exposed her nipples in full! The first magazine I actually bought (rather than found, or swapped with a mate). Fiesta, purchased at Menzies' bookstall, Liverpool Lime Street Station, October 1980. At that bookstall you had to ask the assistant for the magazine you wanted, as all the "adult" stuff was safely behind the counter, so a lot of balls from me to buy my first mag in a very busy, very public railway station, and at a place where you had to ask for what you wanted. I think it must have been the cover that attracted - at least, I think it must have been the most appealing cover (to me) on display. I still have the magazine, soon to have been bought some 37 years ago!!!! I can even (weirdly) remember some details about my purchase:
1/. It was raining, so I had a big coat on to hide my purchase under
2/. I spent about 15 minutes "stalking" the stall, waiting for the perfect moment when it was marginally less busy, and when the customers who might see what I was buying might be less likely to ridicule me - so no males under say 40 nearby, for instance
3/. I remember I had to wait whilst a group of three nuns vacated the stall (not that I'm a Catholic or anything, but somehow I didn't want to stand next to a nun and ask for a porn mag)
4/. I waited until the right assistant was free to serve me: definitely not the bloke in his late twenties, not either of the two "mumsy" type women, but the girl in her mid twenties with the slightly buck teeth and the big glasses. Not that I fancied her in any sort of way, it is just that she looked the most friendly in an odd sort of way.

This is the type of Magazine I had to steel myself to buy in John Menzies ( now WH Smith ) in the Scottish Borders in 1984 - yet the female assistant was not bothered about it , despite my being nervous as hell having to buy it in the open , but yet this was the days when you could buy a men's magazine easily on the top shelf in any shop - which we are steadily losing fast - I also think the new generation of teenagers have lost an age of innocence which we had -
I always relate the true story of my pals uncovering a porn stash ( I was maybe 10 or 12 ) and I was astonished at what was between a woman's thighs - as we had a sheltered life then ( no internet etc ) and only 3 channels on TV
I can't emphasise the sheer shock of realising that a woman had a vagina and hair between her thighs - it was a ' oh my god ' moment - seems dumb to modern people now
note the beauty of the Model from Penthouse , with no silicone breasts ( none were needed then ) and above all , the sheer sexiness of her looks and gaze
for me , the new Models have little sex appeal ( I am 51 ) as they are all giant tits and no ' personality ' - I feel this is something that Vintage Erotica Forum shows most of all , sometimes that less is more - and sexier
( no open vaginas showing the pink or shaven pussy )

I could never have steeled myself enough to do that. If I was called out for looking underage at the till, I'd just go somewhere else. If I ever tried nicking something and got caught, I would not only have to live with the embarrassment, but suffer a hiding from my father as well.

I remember that John Menzies didn't stock anything but soft stuff (i.e. Playboy). They must have changed their policy at some point. I remember buying Playboy Book of Lingerie from there. I still have them!

In 1984 , Penthouse ( and other adult magazines ) were definitely stocked on the top shelf in 1984 , for certain - I remember buying it then , as I kept the centrefold of Helen Masters ( V 19 N2 ) on my bedroom wall for years ( still have it ) and pissed off my mother -
