Thumbs down Vinyl records making a comeback?

While browsing my local HMV I spotted a rack of 12'' records which I assumed where dance tunes for DJs until I noticed a couple of classic rock albums-AC/DC 'For those about to rock' and Black Sabbaths' 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' Then I read that the band Scum of the Earth were about to release their next album on vinyl. Is technology moving backwards, will I have to play these on a wind up phonograph? What's next? Silent movies and telegrams? I was born into a world of vinyl and 8 track tapes but I must admit, I'm not sure I understand this.

All audiophiles will tell you an analogue recording is far superior to a digital one if the equipment is good enough.

Mainly because no information is 'missing' on a vinyl whereas a CD will always only ever be a sample.

It's a purest thing.

This is not new. I buy most music on vinyl. Though through the internet mainly. I have a high end turntable/amp and records sound soo much better than cd.

Yep, nothing new to me either, a large variety of rock, jazz, hip-hop, house, funk, soul, punk, metal, bluegrass, rock-a-billy, disco, zydeco, dub, bagpipe, lounge, grind-core, drum`n bass, ambient, sweek, gospel, ska, black-metal, surf-instrumentals, bollywood, 70s prog rock, samba, new wave and few other categories has been available on vinyl all these years.
Them showing up at big shops now shows that big record-companies are trying to make money this way too because of huge loss of cd-sales.

So, even most puritan Skynyrd-fans must admit that "annoying stupid noise you call music, created by just pushing buttons" , i.e. House-music, Hip-Hop and Jungle, very surely saved the vinyl format then when it was at the edge of extinction.
So, Futuro takes his huge stetson off his head and salutes all knob-twiddlers with greasy hair and pale skin!

All those 60s, 70, 80s gems are so readily available - not just in the many second hand record shops - but also at car boot sales, markets, charity shops, etc. Many at truly bargain prices. To ignore the format would be foolish. I'm surprised that the likes of HMV still bother, but I suppose the vinyl buying customer isn't affected by the growth in downloads which is killing the cd, so will continue to buy the format regardless. The likes of HMV probably see it as niche market that could keep it solvent for a while yet. I'd be surprised if there will be any of the national music selling chains left on the high street in a few years, music will be the domain of the internet and the supermarkets selling the top 40. Maybe the small indie store will make a comeback!

Apparently vinyl is set to kill off CD.

Some labels are giving vouchers to download the music in MP3 format, when you buy the album. Therefore getting the best of both worlds.

? Really, I suppose all the record company wants is for you to purchase 'a' format. They are used to people making a second copy from the purchased 'master' copy for the car, walkman (remember those), mp3 player, etc, so why not offer the customer that second 'user friendly' format free? At least they still make some money. I bet the new vinyl is sold for a premium price though. I've noticed new CDs are now half the price they were five years ago, when the record companies were told off for overcharging, but argued they couldn't reduce the price because of the manufacturing costs involved. Just goes to show what true competition does.

The cd comes in a simple slip case. Yes vinyl is a bit more expensive, but worth it imho. I think cds have came down in price because large supermarket chains sell them so cheap.

Vinyl is now chic among the college hipster crowd. A whole new generation is discovering it, especially those into stuff like VU and Richard Hell, not to mention new "underground" bands. For a 20-year-old, vinyl has the same kind of allure as an old leather-bound book with luxurious color plates.

One advantage of vinyl is it's harder to rip copies for your friends. Artists like that. However, as mentioned above, sometimes the artist will include a CD copy with the vinyl.

Vinyl will never again be the predominant medium for music. I haven't owned a turntable for 10 years and don't plan on buying one; however, I am glad that at least some younger people get to enjoy it and it won't go completely extinct.
