I lived in Germany for the first six years of my life as my Dad (rip) was posted there when he was in the army and I can remember catching the school bus to the English school and the german female driver had the radio on, she was singing to Cant But Me Love by the Beatles and she encoraged us all to join in. Being the youngest of four boys my eldest brother was in to Jim Morrison and The Doors and the song which really sticks out in my early days was Light My Fire.

And to add a further point the first record I ever bought was Billy Dont Be A Hero by Paper Lace Yes I admit it, but dont tell anyone.

I distinctly recall watching the opening to the Captain Kangaroo TV show with my father, sitting on a sofa in a house we moved out of when I was two years old....so I suppose the earliest song I remember is the theme song, which is actually called "Puffin' Billy."

In 1974 Santa left me a compact cassette player and a compilation album of his music. The old man used to sing Durham Town to me at bedtime.

I rediscovered Mr Whittaker in later life and became a fan. My personal favourite is The Last Farewell.

I've never been able to find a song that I used to drive my Dad bonkers with...

He had an 8Track cassette in his car (thanks bmg for the memories, still have a player & a few tapes too)
anyway.., my Dad went to the trouble of making a set of headphones in the back of his car just so he wouldn't have to listen to it himself pity he didn't think about my singing along

I still remember the artist' name, "The Baker Street Philharmonic" and the song...

yeah , must've a real pain in the arse for my Dad It was early seventies, and way before the Muppets made the song well known. The 'Baker Street' version was played on comedy show "Fist Of Fun" (Lee & Herring) around 1992-94?, but i've never heard it since & No YT clips are available.
But I have learnt it was originally a soundtrack to a Finnish or Sweedish Blue Movie - so I really did start young

First 7" record that I could call my own was gifted to me by my Dad also, (and I still have it )

I remember singing the nursery rhyme Itsy Bitsy Spider with my Mom when I was about 3 years old. I also distinctly remember being about 4 or 5 and hearing I Can See Clearly Now and also Lean On Me. Those are the first two popular songs I remember hearing on the radio circa 1972 - 73.
