A 'R' rating - Meaning that the filmmakers can deal with grown up concepts in grown up ways without having to worry about traumatizing the sensibilities of little Johnny. It also allows them to take an interesting (or controversial) topic and follow it to a logical conclusion and not be forced to shoe-horn in a cutsie robot or a talking stuffed animal just to keep little Johnny quiet.

A literate script. Preferably not by someone whose sole writing credit is an episode of Deep Space 9 etc.

Robert Mitchum
Cary Grant
Spencer Tracy
Robert Ryan
Clint Eastwood
David Carradine
Richard Basehart
Robert Duvall
Robert Vaughn

There are so many more I can't think of. But anyone of them always makes a movie great

Anything directed by Ridley Scott, and anything starring Tom Wilkinson, Rachel Weisz, Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, or Kristen Wiig.

Not necessarily a must see, but even before Whiplash, whenever I saw JK Simmons' name on the credits, I knew I'd be guaranteed a couple of attention-grabbing minutes, minimum.

I already posted on this topic (six years ago!), but going to add Alicia Vikander. She's astonishingly good (go watch The Danish Girl, or The Testament of Youth, or Ex-machina for examples)and IMO the finest actress of her generation, which considering her contemporaries include Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara is quite something.

John Ford directing. Vivien Leigh and Warren Oates acting. Gotta love that red sweater GTO's wearing.

Alicia's kinda dark for a Swede. She looks like she is from Northern Italy.

"Who makes a film a Must See"?

A naked Roxanne Pallett, for a start.
