El Cid (1961)
Trailer Batshit crazy Moor general Ibn Yusuf (Herbert Lom) summons the Emirs of al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) and delivers a fiery speech about their reputation as poets and scientists when they should be warriors of Islam. Now on the other side, in the Kingdom of Castile, Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (Charlton Heston) is on his way to marry Jimena (Sophia Loren) but is forced to take a detour to save a Christian town from the invading Moors who are defeated and their commanders, the Emirs al-Mu'taman (Douglas Wilmer) and al-Kadir (Frank Thring), captured. As Don Rodrigo decides to spare their lives, they give him the nickname El Cid (the Spanish pronunciation of al-Sidi, meaning Lord in Arabic) and swear allegiance to him. But Don Rodrigo is accused of treason for letting the two Arabs live and the whole issue is taken before King Ferdinand of Castile (Ralph Truman) in whose presence Rodrigo's old father, Don Diego (Michael Hordern), is publicly humiliated by Jimena's father Gormaz (Andrew Cruickshank). During a private meeting, Rodrigo begs Gormaz to apologise to his old and proud father for the offence of the Díaz family's honour but Gormaz refuses and is killed in a duel with his almost-son-in-law. Now with even Jimena turning against him, times get tough for the Cid. This is an absolutely dazzling classic and truly epic in every way. The acting is great, the reenactment of this particular era in Spain's history looks believable (apart from some stereotypes) and even Charlton Heston deserves praise. The three hours elapsed in a snap. But being a product of its time, El Cid gets portrayed like a noble saint when in reality he was something of an anti-hero. This is also one of the weaknesses of the equally monumental Spartacus with Kirk Douglas. But they are entertaining films and not history books, so a few small liberties can be excused. |

Watched "Ghost Town" (2008) Ricky Gervais romantic comedy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Town_(2008_film) I have enjoyed Gervais on the Graham Norton Show and on the Golden Globes, so I enjoyed this movie. Standard Rom Com with a short, fat leading man - a comment about himself that Gervais actually said during an interview about it. No female nudity
I'd give it 3 - 3.5 out of 5. |

Stan and Ollie, because my brother hadn't seen it. Mrs Goose said 'this is going to be one of those films you alternate watching with the ones about the immortal guy (He Never Died) and that stupid vampire film (What We Do In The Shadows) isn't it.'

Gamera The Invincible = Ok/Meh Gamera Vs Baragon = Good (only showa film without kids) Gamera Vs Gyaos = Decent Destroy All Planets = Poor Gamers Vs Gurion = Bad Gamera Vs Jiger/Monster X = Decent Gamera Vs Zigra = Haven't seen but universally agreed to be poor to bad. Gamera The Super Monster = Haven't seen but universally agreed to be horrible & by far the worst of the series. Gamera The Guardian of the Universe = Great Gamera 2 - Advent of Legion = Strongly Great (among the best kajiu movies ever) Gamera 3 - Revenge of Irys = Strongly Great (among the best kajiu movies ever) Gamera The Brave = Haven't seen but universally agreed to be decent & fun. |

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night. A good film and the actors portraying Freddy Mercury and Brian May were excellent.

The Haunting of Borley Rectory (2019)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1776097/ 1944 and an Anerican code breaker is stationed in a cottage in the grounds of Borley Rectory, famed now as the most haunted house in Britain, the Rectory burned down in 1939 before the start of WWII. I hoped this would be a pretty decent horror film but although does not deliver the goods it knocks the bollocks off this shitty attempt https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4020312/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAJGoaG6Wug 2019 movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqxsfRjz1t8 Not a lot on the web about this yet
