Sadly there are now 59 dead from this one tragic incident. We still don't know what made the bastard who should be nameless do it, was it a twisted attempt at notoriety or did something personal upset the selfish shithead so much that he had to make hundreds suffer?

It does not matter how many die, the attitude in much of the US towards gun controls is simply that 'I have the right!' It does not matter how poorly trained you are, if at all, your mental health condition or anything else, 'I have the right'. This is deep set in the US psyche, and it needs to change through re education, there is no justification, or need for weapons designed for combat troops to be bought, or even to be available to civilians. Nothing can ever justify their possession in my view.

As for hunting, I would prefer a single shot rifle any day, they are far more accurate and a damn sight less dangerous!

Two Dark American Truths From Las Vegas

The dead and the wounded, and their family and friends, of course deserve most support and sympathy. But their fellow countrymen should reflect on two dark truths the episode underscores. I was going to end that sentence with “reveals,” but that’s not right: We know these things already.

The first is that America will not stop these shootings. They will go on. We all know that, which makes the immediate wave of grief even worse.

Here’s the other dark truth about America that today’s shooting reminds us of. The identity of the shooter doesn’t affect how many people are dead or how grievously their families and communities are wounded. But we know that everything about the news coverage and political response would be different, depending on whether killer turns out to be “merely” a white American man with a non-immigrant-sounding name.

Did the Las Vegas Shooting Involve an Automatic Weapon?

On Monday evening, ABC News reported that a modified bump stock was recovered from the scene, and that authorities were still examining the weapons to see if any were capable of fully automatic fire. Bump stocks are legal, aftermarket accessories that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire at rates approaching those of fully automatic versions.

If the shooter used one or more automatic rifles—or even if it’s confirmed that he used legal accessories like a bump stock or trigger crank to approach their rate of fire, as some experts believe audio recordings suggest—it would mark a significant departure from other recent mass shootings.

“What we don’t know is how many mass shootings didn’t happen over the past months and years because people couldn’t get an automatic weapon,” he said. “There are plenty of deranged, angry people out there. If more angry, sociopathic people had had automatic weapons, our numbers would look even worse.”

Google and Facebook Failed Us

In the crucial early hours after the Las Vegas mass shooting, it happened again: Hoaxes, completely unverified rumors, failed witch hunts, and blatant falsehoods spread across the internet.
But they did not do so by themselves: They used the infrastructure that Google and Facebook and YouTube have built to achieve wide distribution. These companies are the most powerful information gatekeepers that the world has ever known, and yet they refuse to take responsibility for their active role in damaging the quality of information reaching the public.

The problem can be traced back to a change Google made in October 2014 to include non-journalistic sites in the “In the News” box instead of pulling from Google News.
But one might have imagined that not every forum site could be included. The idea that 4chan would be within the universe that Google might scrape is horrifying.
Worse, when I asked Google about this, and indicated why I thought it was a severe problem, they sent back boilerplate.

What I have learned from this endless discussions about "Gun Control vs. NRA Threads" in a matter with the US:

As the gun dead in the US will be over the birth rate, that problem will be solved in the US soon or
later !.

Fully automatic weapons are used in less then 1% of crime.
There are only 20-30 mass shootings a year, the majority of them are not with full auto weapons & the ones that are are typically stolen, bought illegally or illegally modified.

The idea of refusing to allow 323.1 MILLION Americans access to a tool (a tool that requires a 200 dollar tax stamp, a over 6 month waiting period & a FBI back ground check) because of the actions of less then 50 people a year is absolutely preposterous.

I appreciate much of what you say but I disagree wholeheartedly with the conclusions, statistics can be and are warped by all sides whether it's what crimes are included, the span of dates etc.

I'm just thankful I was born in a country where guns are alien to our normal daily lives and not seen as tools.
