a friend of mine is a true southern redneck and he's a nice guy so i want to be clear i'm not meaning to insult him (or anyone else) by posting this, but it really made me laugh.
he was explaining to me that the bias towards the south and redneck jokes etc. was only because of the way they talk and this is what he told me: "its just because the way we talk, and we cant help it, people just think we sound stupid but that dont mean we are, look, theres plenty of smart people out there, they just aint from around here" |

I have a friend from Louisiana who talks very slowly, but always with correct grammar. Some folks think he is stupid because he is obviously from the South. He happens to be a physicist with degrees from LSU, MIT, and the University of Alabama. I know quite a few very bright people; he may very well be at the top of the list.
On the other hand, I know some true rednecks. Some are very nice people and most have been men of their word. Quite often they are poorly educated with quite limited vision. The racists among them quite closely resemble the lower classes of black people they despise. Not all rednecks are trailer trash, but Southern and Midwestern trailer trash are all Rednecks. I think that Northerners like myself (raised in Ohio, a Union state in the Civil War) should be willing to respect other Americans in the South, and un-learn the stereotypes of most Southerners as racist, religious, uncultured rednecks who want to restore the Confederacy, possibly by supporting the Klan. Actually, the New South is more liberal, more racially diverse (think of the African-American population and also people like my friend David who is Mexican-American living in Arkansas...) and more tolerant in the cities and suburbs. It's only the rural, isolated white people who are "rednecks", and they are probably the more religious people and more Republican politically, who give this region of the country a bad name and the stereotypes of Bible Belt and/or Klan.
Let's not forget that Atlanta, South Florida, and parts of the Carolinas are Southern, and they are definitely more urban and liberal-leaning. Let's not forget that Elvis Presley, Roxy Blue, Baton Rouge, and Britney Spears are from the South, to name some musical talent I am familiar with. [I don't count Britney Spears as "erotic talent" even though she's now a voluptuous MILF who still dances with a snake... ] But there are a few people from the Upper South and Upper Midwest (mostly Kentucky and Indiana) who are definitely country, redneck, "white trash" -type people who may even inhabit smaller cities like Cincinnati. I have certain relatives like this, and being at just a few family gatherings of such people, I felt totally out of place because of the rude, arrogant, sleazy behaviors I encountered. They're not quite the type of people who would date someone from a family reunion, but they did some disreputable things like having children out of wedlock (one of them was 15 and the guy was 25!) or going on welfare, and never changing how they live their lives, ever. In twelve years' time, I am glad I only went to three such "events" on my father's side of the family, who are more country or Southern people, even though my dad is atypical of his family. I prefer the educated, middle-class, Midwestern people on the other side of my family. But I still think that Baton Rouge and Roxy Blue are talented musicians and album-oriented rock that belonged on Z-ROCK with all the others back in the day. ) |
