We went London to Sharjah(United Arab Emirates) then onto Singapore to the final destination Perth-arrived four hours late due to a 3 hr delay.

Wouldn't you rather have stopped over in Singapore or Shanghai, or gone the other way and stopped over in Los Angeles, San Francisco or perhaps Lima or Santiago? Sharjah: that sounds an even more dreary prospect than Dubai. However, one airport is much like another; it would only really make a difference if you were going to make an overnight or one day stay in the actual city.

We did stop, for an hour in the Singapore Airport and ditto in Sharjah, but back then we could only afford to do that-the obvious thing would have been to stay a night or two and then fly on but it would have cost us double. If I remember correctly it was £549 each for the flight-a deal that my friend found. We didn't stay in a hotel in Perth, our friend put us up for the week we were there, and we flew to Melbourne and my friends' cousins put us up too.

Did you know it is exactly 50yrs since Tokyo hosted the 1964 Olympics where Lyn Davies broke the British long jump record that stood for years until both Chris Tomlinson and then Greg Rutherford finally broke it. Now it will be returning to Tokyo in 2020 so they've had to wait a long time. My Dad was out there to see that unique record btw.

Larry Lewis ran the 100-yard dash in 17.8 seconds in 1969, thereby setting a new world's record for runners in the 100-years-or-older class. He was 101.

Javier Sotormayor's(CUBA) is the longest unbroken field world record that has yet to be broken in the High Jump. Some have got very close to it especially this year but none have quite made it over. Personally I believe that it will be broken but it all depends on the conditions and in this sport you need both speed & height from take off.

Further to answers about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang earlier in this thread here are some other amazing facts. Gleaned from the Radio 4 programme '50yrs of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'
In the book he is caled Commander Pott, in the film he is given the name Caractacus and an extra T is added and an S to make Potts.(Crackpot get it!) It was well-known that Ian Fleming loved fast cars(and fast women) and he named his car in the book after Chittybang owned and raced by Count Louis Zabrovsky. In the book the car flies south and lands on the Goodwin Sands, Dover before flying off to France for an adventure. In the film they end up in the fictional place of Vulgaria. In the book Commander Pott is married to a woman called Mimsy-the character of Truly Scrumptious(Sally Ann Howes) was made up for the film. And incidentally there is no child catcher in the book either. That character and Truly was added to the film screenplay by Roald Dahl.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the so-called 'Rumble in the Jungle' with Muhammed Ali against George Foreman.

I think it's the 40th. In 1964, Zaire was the Congo and Muhammed Ali was still Cassius Clay.
