We are apes. Apes live in social groupings where status and leadership are negotiated, not with diplomas and exams, but with social support. 'Success' breeds support. We are doing the same thing with our unconscious minds - this is why women follow fashions so avidly; they are aping the alpha females in the competition for alpha males (although they don't know it). It is why men do daft things like buy expensive cars and wear gold Rolexes - to demonstrate their prowess. This then wins them further support. It is not logical, but evolution developed reasoning very recently.
By the way, OCD and porn have much in common, but that would be another thread.
