He has a point about even a regional war with nuclear weapons though. If India and Pakistan decided to nuke each other with a hundred or so warheads being used, THAT would cause some significant global problems.

You wouldn't want to stand out in the rain for a couple of years, and there would be a significant uptick in background radiation. Here in the USA cancer rates would go up, and there would be an ethanol shortage as corn crops were redirected towards producing food staples.

The big starvation would occur in India and the areas nearby. Probably some Chinese would be starved to death as well.

I'm surprised, but that's not the first University Professor I listened speaking about this highly potential danger.

Here is the pedigree of this professor: Pr Brian Toon

I spent two days on last week to inform myself a little bit more about the nuclear tests during the Cold War.

"The Marshall Islands, the Bikini Islands, American soldiers coming back with cancers and not compensate by their administration, people of this atoll relocated because of radiation, French and English atomic programs... Mururoa contamination.
Ivy Mike, Castle Bravo (the huge mistake made when they evaluated the power of this bomb), Castle Romeo, Castle Yankee, Tsar Bomba and other Soviet tests....""

I was stunned.

Let think a nuke falling on New York or Los Angeles. How many people would die, what would be the consequences?

Can we be that sure that still today, generals, politicians and even scientists have a real idea what could happen in case of a minor conflict?

Why the father of the Tsar Bomba, Andreï Sakharov himself, pointed the danger of a nuclear war?

And not only him:

The insanity of nuclear deterrence (General Lee Butler commander in chief of the entire American nuclear war machine)

^ Oh yeah, they made quite a mess in the Pacific. Radiation was up in the USA back in the 50's, when they were blasting off stuff in Nevada.

There's a reason an above-ground test ban treaty was signed by all major nuclear participants.

I read in a book somewhere that enough fallout was spread around that it is likely every person on Earth has an atom or two of plutonium in their bodies.

The evidence from Bikini Atoll shows that the land remains unusable for permanent human habitation even though 60 years have passed since the last nuclear test there. Background radiation is nearly twice the maximum allowed and local shellfish and breadfruit are lethal. No one knows how long it will be before the contamination dies down enough that descendants of the original population can safely live there again.

Has the Russian government released any information about the current environment of Novaya Zemlya?

Fat Man was 6.4 kg of Plutonium. (21 kt of TNT)

In total, there is enough plutonium and enriched uranium in the world to produce the equivalent of 20,000 Hiroshima bombs, according to the International Panel on Fissile Materials, a group of experts.

More simply, an organization like the Islamic State could easily make a "dirty bomb", which would spread radioactive substances with a conventional explosive, alarmed the IAEA.

"Dirty bombs would be enough to (sow) panic in any big city in the world," says Yukiya Amano.

But such a bomb would not require enriched uranium or plutonium and could be made with nuclear materials widely used in hospitals or universities, premises generally much less well kept than a conventional installation.

Just think what would happen with a bastard getting a bomb with 200 g.

A chap called Dhiren Barot, resident originally in North West London, proposed a scheme for packing limousines with explosives and radioactive waste, and exploding them outside the New York stock exchange. However, he was detected by MI5 and convicted in a British court, which sentenced him to life with a minimum of 30 years before he can apply for parole. He presently resides in the Severe Personality Disorders Unit at HMP Frankland in County Durham. They pour jugs of fully heated cooking oil over his head occasionally, just to keep him on his toes.
