In 1964, LIFE magazine ran a spread on the new “shock” fashion, the topless swimsuit (called the “monokini” at first). Those of us who remember that issue (fondly) will recall that it scandalously showed nipples in a family magazine:

what none of us could have suspected at the time is that in fact the photographers LIFE commissioned a whole series of shots, none of which made it into the magazine. Fifty years later, the images have surfaced in the online accessible LIFE image archive. And what a pleasure they are.

To show off the topless fashion to best advantage the photographers needed to find (in those pre-breast-enhancement surgery days) a model with naturally perky, tight, firm boobs. They chose a professional ballet dancer from the New York City “Harkness” ballet, named Daphne Dayle.

Daphne had a long and distinguished career as a soloist with the Harkness, and also (briefly) dabbled in movies in Europe.

Pity that LIFE couldn’t publish the full set (or sell them, say, to Playboy), or she would have been a household name to a wider, appreciative audience. But in any event, now, we can admire her perfect “as mother nature made them” rack.

UPDATE:
She was born in 1934, died in 1985, and appeared in Laissez tirer les tireurs (1963), Des frissons partout (1963) and Nick Carter va tout casser (1964).

Was married to the American actor Eddie Constantine and appeared in several of his films: "Laissez Tirer Les Tireurs" (1963), "Des Frissons Partout" (1963) and "Nick Carter Va Tout Casser" (1964)

I was watching Nick Carter Va Tout Casser (License to Kill) and noticed this lovely lady and did some research. She has one post on this forum (http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/sho...8&postcount=63) by qwerty17.

I found that she was prominent in Life magazine modeling a new 'monokini'.

I then found many high res behind the scenes photos from this shoot on artsandculture.g**gle.com
