World Championship 2016
The quartelfinals are on tomorrow . Any thoughts who will win this time?
I'd put my money on the Finns again. Their win against Canada yesterday was quite impressive.

San Diego Gulls update
Unfortunately, the team crashed out of the playoffs, but still not too bad for a first year team ravaged by injuries and call-ups by the parent team. Here is what is probably the last story on the team's first year - the paper version has the title FLOCK SEES GULLS THRIVE IN YEAR 1

No Calder Cup repeat this year. The defending champion Toronto Marlies were eliminated last night by the Charlotte Checkers 4 games to 2. Charlotte will face the winner of the Chicago Wolves-San Diego Gulls series, which the Wolves lead, 3-2, for the 2019 Calder Cup title.

Following Russia at international level for as long as I can remember it was a disappointing bronze at the WC. However even at fifteen years of age Matvei Michkov of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl looks like he will be the next big star out of Russia. He is demolishing scoring records set by the likes of Ovechkin, Malkin and making high draft picks this year like Podkolzin look ordinary.
However Team GB lifted my spirits as it is my team and it has been a long while indeed since it competed in the top division. To go into the reasons why Denmark is now turning out NHL level players while we just have one draftee and a seventh round one at that in Liam Kirk (Peterborough Petes OHL) is rather involved. Suffice to say IHUK cannot get the owners and different league bodies to work together. Clubs would still rather import players and limit ice time to British kids. There are insufficient rinks and ice time if available is given over to skating. Only Nottingham and Sheffield have dedicated arenas and any junior programmes of note. The standard of coaching is not great either. However there a couple of academies set up by Okanagan which give full time schooling along with after hours hockey every day and kids from this have emerged into the u18 team recently. Also British players seem reluctant to try their luck abroad. Ben Bowns the Cardiff netminder was stellar in this tournament and I have felt could always played at a higher level than the EIHL ie the Allsvenskan or DEL. GB needed to beat France who were minus Auvitu and Roussell and were 3-0 down at one point but came back to win 4-3 in overtime. I doubt we will stay up next year but the support was superb. It is a pity the BBC barely gave any coverage on the website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLbouxdHj3M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW_5hrSSsXI |

Seattle will join in 2021 with an expansion draft and a new arena. The NHL draft is up and coming and as usual there will be a few surprise movers. |
