The way I have it set up is good for desktop PCs. , but laptops are another story. I have separate hard drives for windows and Linux to boot from. I use the Linux boot for the telecom use (internet), and windows as an isolated OS. Windows is OK until you connect to networks, there lies the problems with windows. The best part is, Linux sees the windows hard drive and can write to it, but windows doesn't see the Linux hard drive, sweet deal.

I've now done similar on my Lenova Thinkpad. Partitioned the hard drive and set up a dual-boot system with Manjaro Xfce as the main OS for online work. When necessary, I can switch to the original Windows 7 Pro (which, try as much as I could, was refusing to update) for off-line work.

oh yes, the lightweight XFCE editions, i just use mate, it was my first, and i stuck with it. I read that XFCE was good for the old CPUs to run good . I know puppy runs as root, so that is a no-go.

Those stubborn Windows updates are one of the reasons i took that OS offline, i had to rabbit hole the KBs to rid my Win7 of the GWX pestilence, and knew that was the sign i needed, Vista was kind of immune from GWX but still mired in the update abyss.

I still like having windows as an editor, i use the fast stone resizer and the beloved mspaint, I haven't spent the time to configure WINE to use those two applications.

With so many DEs to choose from on Linux, it's inevitable that each will have his/her own favourite. I started with KDE (on Mepis) back in about 2005 subsequently used Gnome and Fluxbox but eventually found Xfce to be the one best suited to my needs - especially as I could configure it to look like Windows XP - taskbar at the bottom and StartMenu lower left etc.

Thankfully, there now seem to be fewer and fewer Windows applications that don't have a decent equivalent in Linux. I can do almost all my photo-editing now using just GIMP and LightZone, although I have managed to install IrfanView and PhotoFiltre under WINE.

As windows 10 gets more and more integrated with the new PCs being sold and old windows systems get used up for whatever reason , and members are looking for alternatives, I can envision the need for guidance. I can see the need for the topic " I did this in windows before 10, how do i get it done with linux, because windows 10 is repulsive"

although, the more that i think about it, it would just mean alot of googling to find out how to get it done with linux, but like windows, it is a perpetual learning endeavour.

This very appealing to me atm, as I struggle to install 7 [desktop] on one of new mobo's that is gim-rigged to force you to 10.

Maybe I could tolerate 10 this way. Much on web abt dual boot, a lot of it dated. So welcome any advice:

1. 2 hdd's. On desktop this can be cheap [small bargain ssd for linux stuff.] But how is it better than partitions on one hdd? Does it mean you don't have to reboot to switch OS?

2. Drivers. No guide I read so far deals w this.

Start w mobo drivers; then vid card, printer, scanner, etc.. Do you have to dual install some drivers?

From what i recall, yes you can do dual-boot with one hdd, like laptops, but there is what is called a MBR (master boot record) which is corruptible by dual OS on one hard drive. this is why i prefer the dual hdd approach... One MBR_per hard drive. You do have to restart to switch OS.

Mobo drivers.... my linux mate saw my gigabyte mobo just fine. and most mobo manufacturers issue drivers for windows only....if you are using a uefi mobo, that is uncharted waters. i had one give me fits a few months ago, and drew the line..

with video cards ...nvidia is good with linux support, but AMD is hit or miss.. last i checked, AMD is issuing linux drivers for their newer cards, i just use the generic nouveau linux drivers, as it is way easier for multiple displays or if the need emerges to switch cards out, no driver switching required.

Printers and scanners are model specific, i think brother supports linux thoroughly...

Can anyone why explain there have been so many Windows 10 updates recently?

I have had 2 major uploads in the past month with an additional 2 small uploads.

It's annoying as these major uploads take the best part of 3 hours to install.

Maybe your Machine wasn't upgraded to "Redstone 2 Creators Update 1703" yet

MICROSOFT releases "Day after Day" or more likely "Week after Week" or "Month after Month"

Windows_10#Updates_and_support

You could check your Version by pressing

+r
then type winver
press Return
and the following Window will show your Version and your Build Number
