I thought I would just pop a link here, one very usefull programe ive been using for awhile now is a Free Audio and Video Conversion Software called converterlite, i allways seem to go back to this when I need to convert one video format to another.

Its been very usefull, infact I would go as far as to say its one of my most used programes on my computer besides my browser & video player.

The link can be found here:

Does anyone know anything about or use Ubuntu - a free, Linux based operating system. I bought a discount laptop and it has no operating system or hard drive and I am restoring it.
I know you can get some pretty good open source software on the Internet.

Laptop without hard drive? But there is at least optical drive (CD/DVD)?

To boot your laptop/netbook by CD/DVD drive you need access to other computer with hard drive and internet. Google Ubuntu (64-bit I assume), download ISO image, and burn this ISO image (select option ISO at burn software) to writeable CD/DVD. Now you have bootable CD/DVD.

Btw: You wrote you restore it. Means you install hard drive?

I meant that I will be installing the drive and adding an operating system. I have done a bit of work on desktops in the past. The laptop has a CD/DVD drive. My plan was to download Ubuntu onto a CD/DVD and search for a good deal on a hard drive on Ebay. Thank you. You have been very helpful.

I use Mageia 3 on my laptop(+windows 7, for Photoshop), I find verry user friendly, and with KDE it feel like windows, also you can use a live linux until you buy a hdd, you even install/use live on/from usb stick(well, you will work with the speed of usb but most time will stay/work from ram)...the live part it have the downside that after reboot will not remember your settings...

Thanks. I had not even heard of that operating system. There is something about paying for an operating system (and its updates) forever and ever that is beginning to irk me. Microsoft develops a crappy, poorly conceived new operating system -Vista for example - you pay for it, then six months to a year later they come up with another crappy os and you pay for that one too. I hope open source is the wave of the future and takes market share from the big guys.

Default ComicRack for splitting pdf into pages.

ComicRack is a freeware program for reading cbr and cbz files, but also handles pdf and most pages-as-books formats. The nice things about it are the ease of taking the pdf type formats and turning them into pages, the fact it's not Adobe with its security vulnerability issues, and you don't need to have some third-party application just for paginating . Plus you can also create pdfs, as well.

http://comicrack.cyolito.com/documentation/overview

Making pages from pdf (works with any format CR can read):

1. Open .pdf with ComicRack (you may have to right click and associate the pdf file type with CR if you have Acrobat or some other program as default. Right-Click > Open for Windows. I use Windows 8.1)

2. Wherever you store your pdfs create a new folder for dragging images into. I typically just place the pdf within a new folder so i'm working from one spot.

3.Select the Pages tab. This will show the actual pages that make up the pdf. Select Views if you want to see the thumbnails view.

4. Minimize the CR window or whatever works for you so you can see the open destination folder. Ctrl + A to select all pages, or select whatever pages you want to keep (Ctrl > left-click for every image), and then drag the images into your folder.

5. After just a few seconds, you will have all of the pages in your new folder. Done. That easy. And you can even keep the original pdf.

Other advantages to CR is it is easy to customize to your library of pdfs, it supports plug-ins and they even have iPad and Android development.
