'BadTunnel' Bugs Left Every Microsoft Windows PC Vulnerable For 20 Years

http://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbr...y#312e11a45c64

Microsoft is today closing off a vulnerability that one Chinese researcher claims has “probably the widest impact in the history of Windows.” Every version of the Microsoft operating system going back to Windows 95 is affected, leaving anyone still running unsupported operating systems, such as XP, in danger of being surreptitiously surveilled.

According to Yang Yu, founder of Tencent’s Xuanwu Lab, the bug can be exploited silently with a “near-perfect success rate”, as the problems lie in the design of Windows. The ultimate impact? An attacker can hijack all a target’s web use, granting the hacker ”Big Brother power”, as soon as the victim opens a link or plugs in a USB stick, claimed Yu. He received $50,000 from Microsoft’s bug bounty program for uncovering the weakness, which the researcher has dubbed BadTunnel. Microsoft issued a fix today in its Patch Tuesday list of updates.

A great way to backup is to clone your partition(s). I used Norton Ghost (you have to pay for it), but now use Macrium Reflect (free), which is perfect. It doesn't take all that long and setting a partition back takes up even less time. Once in a while you'll run into some problem you'll not be able to fix without reinstalling Windows or which will take far too much time to locate and fix. You put the partition back in less than 20 minutes and you're back in the game with a machine in a state without the problem.
You can even put the cloned partition on an external HDD and restore it from there using rescue media such as a CD or USB-key to boot from.

As a rule of thumb, always put your data on another partition and make incremental /mirror backups with very effective and superfast Robocopy (with or without its GUI) which is part of Windows.

I have been using MS since the days of DOS and NEVER had to reinstall any of my operating systems, not even once. When using partition backup you don't have to configure your system all over again, you are going to need installing far less Windows updates if you backup on a regular basis. So, nothing but advantages.

I never work with restore points, they take up far too much HDD space.

I have several PC's, running different operating systems, some of them in virtual machines, some are dual boot installations. Would you believe I am still running Win 311 on one of them, because of several and one very large program I made back in the days on Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Currently I use Win 8.1, 8.1 Pro, Win 7, Win 7 Pro, XP Pro and Win 3.11.

That large program I was talking about, its source code, its database and the standalone executable itself can all be zipped onto one single 1.4 Mb diskette, yes 1.4 Mb of HDD space. Today's programmers hardly optimize their programs anymore and the program has to carry far too much garbage with it. Often for the program to run it needs far too many prerequisites. Today's programs are a bit like a car with 50 wheels, because one day, which never happens, they have to be used as a truck.

Currently at MS-DEFCON 2:

http://www.askwoody.com/

MS-DEFCON 1: Current Microsoft patches are causing havoc. Don’t patch.

MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

MS-DEFCON 3: Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems.

MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented here. Check this site to see if you’re affected and if things look OK, go ahead and patch.

MS-DEFCON 5: All’s clear. Patch while it’s safe.

My advice is this:

Use Firefox for a browser. Install the NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons. This will kill Live Jasmin and all the other ads they have here.

Has Microsoft found a new way of coercing us?

I downloaded an expensive tool for trying before buying, not on a Microsoft Site, but on a respectable website.

Immediately after I checked my system using AdwCleaner.

There were two things which were changed: a file and a key.

My anti-virus did not object to that.

Since I was not sure I would keep what I had downloaded, I kept it in case I had to deinstall it.

But I realised my access to Internet had changed: it took more time.

The access was slightly changed, so I had to reset it up.

My parameters had been set up to a Microsoft site using Internet Explorer. I reset it up for using Firefox.

This is typical of a virus.

It seems Microsoft has gone down one degree more in the infamy.

They push me to work on Apple.

Did anyone notice changes in Firefox ?

Everytime I connect to WEF I got a red message warning me.

My antivirus seems to have nothing to do with that.

My version of Firefox is the last one : 47.0

I have Adblock ultimate installed.

I checked Firefox setup, everything looks normal.
