As I understand it, the BBC Asian Network tweet was prompted by a BBC report that Pakistan had asked Facebook to help investigate "blasphemous content" posted on the social network by Pakistanis.

However the way the tweet was presented by Shazia Awan was indefensibly ham-fisted in my opinion, and the BBC was right to apologise for an apparent endosement of Pakistan cracking down on dissent in that country (Pakistan's blasphemy laws does allow the death penalty in some cases).

Also the furore over the BBC's tweet appears to obscure the fact that Facebook agreed to send a team to Pakistan to address reservations about content on the social media site:

In answer to the other question, the BBC Asian Network was threatened with closure in 2010 by the BBC Trust, who was looking to reduce its budget, but was given a second chance by the Trust.
