Many celebrities have posed nude for PETA. But honestly, I have a gripe with PETA. It's hypocritical, but still...

If you've ever watched any of their videos, they're horrible. Pigs hung upside down, squealing as their throats are cut..cattle kicking and squirming around on the floor dying, calves kept in tiny stalls where they can't even turn around kept for veal, chickens slung into the floor, even cows hung by the neck from a forklift..

Problem is...I love meat. I love steaks, I love bacon, pork, chicken, etc.

I'm such a hypocrite..I have a real problem with this. I guess the bottom line is, we should really treat animals with respect..even if we use them for food. They should at least be free ranging, able to live a good life, and killed quickly and humanely.

I agree with what you're saying Warren, but as much as I want the ethical treatment of animals, I'd like to get the ethical treatment of people first.

When PETA was first founded in 1976(NOT 1981 as they want you to believe), this was the idea behind it. We exploit animals. We therefore owe it to the animals to exploit them in the most humane manner possible. To wit, all PETA did for the first five years of their existence was to try to get Mary Kay Cosmetics to end their chemical testing of rabbits, as they had definitive results for fifty years and only continued to test to get compensation for it.

Imagine; one of the big five cosmetic companies in the world becomes the first animal safe cosmetic company, blowing the PETA cosmetic companies away before they're even started. If only.

In my view our use of animals beit for food, clothing, medical experiments, glue, pet food etc are all forms of predation by a species at the top of the food chain. I'm all for treating them ethically but let's not forget where we've come from eh? Our teeth and stomach enzymes have evolved to cope with a diet that includes meat. Our ancesters would have found a use for just about every part of an animal they killed. My grandparents were lucky to eat meat once a week so I'm grateful for that bit of undercooked dead flesh on my plate. The only problem I have with meat is the contribution its production makes to the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

I eat animals, though I've been a vegetarian at several points in my life. In my view, animals that we raise for food should not have to suffer, and I for one am willing to pay a premium to producers that treat animals humanely (in other words, I purchase from specific small producers - big agribusiness will never care about ethics). Even those who don't care about farm and slaughterhouse conditions should want higher quality meat, and happy, healthy animals will certainly yield better finished product.

PETA was, indeed, rational at their inception, but have become (in my view) largely counter-productive by way of their grandstanding publicity tactics.

I think Naomi Campbell sums up most peoples perception of PETA. Wont wear fur for ethical reasons till the money is right.
We should look at it from her point of view; what better than the outside of a scarce dead animal to show off your blood diamonds?

Fur is a natural way to keep warm. What are the ethics of saving baby seals so they can eat our fish stocks and in turn be eaten by bigger predators just because Bridgette Bardot doesn't like Newfies ?

I am on the horns of a dilema between logic and emotion I dont give a rats arse about Stephen Fry and his spectacled bear, hearing aid frog, disability benefits dingo, but on the ohter hand if we cant save that particular fleabag it can be extrapolated that we cant save ourselves.
My genuine feelings that you can take all the endangered species and barbecue them in whale oil is at odds with the knowledge that because of our actions the endangered species that is most likely to become extinct as a direct result of our actions is us
