One thing you should take into account when considering Australia's lack of porn industry is that with a population of a little under 22 million we are a relatively small country. I doubt you'll find many countries with similar size populations that have a significant porn industry.

Of course matters aren't helped by the fact that technically it is illegal to sell hardcore video material outside of ACT and Northern Territory (hardcore magazines, oddly, have been legal everywhere except Queensland since the '70s when publications like Bawdy and Sex Paper used to be displayed openly by footpath vendors outside of the train station in Flinder's Street, Melbourne). As previously mentioned hardcore DVDs and Videos are still freely available in nearly all adult "bookshops" through out Australia with the authorities seemingly turning a blind eye. The shop near where I live has 90% of it's display space devoted to DVDs and, along with the regular porn, also stocks some mighty extreme stuff.

There was a German guy who went by the name of George Swartz (I think) who made hardcore loops here in the '70s, there's a segment devoted to him in the movie "Australia After Dark", a softcore sexploitation documentary that was made here in the mid '70s (and would make very interesting viewing if anyone has an old VHS gathering dust....) and he also made a pseudo sex education film called "Sex Aids And How To Use Them" that, despite containing frequent hardcore sex, gained an R certificate by dint of it's dubious educational tag and screened at the Barrel Cinema in Melbourne, a grindhouse that hit on the innovative idea of employing live strippers to perform between it's usually softcore double features. "Sex Aids And How To Use Them" was the first film I ever saw that had explicit sex in it, I don't think it was ever released on video and God knows if a print still exists and the same goes for any of the other loops George Swartz made here.

It's worth mentioning that, while we Aussies seem a little backward when it comes to pornography, prostitution is legal here (except Queensland) and in Melbourne hardcore live sex shows can be seen at Maxine's Gentleman's Club (I have a video shot there that I'm considering posting) amongst other places.

I'm sure more porn would be made here if someone could figure out how to make a good dollar out of it.
