Australian - Aussie Rules - Football 1841-
I figured as we always seem to discuss the finals in the English Football thread around September/October maybe nice to actually see through a season if anyone feels like commenting
Doesnt have to be about the current season or even the AFL competition If you follow your local leagues then feel free to talk about it as we do in the english football thread...I'd loved to know whose up n coming and undiscovered before their bought by who ever Could be about little anecdotes you wish to recall I recall buying Mark Jackson biography Dumb like Fox for 2 dollars and just the part where he confessed to pissing on St Trevor Barkers back in the showers at St Kilda was enough to say that was 2 dollars well spent. As the cycling thread has shown talking about past greats or significant events can be interesting memories for those that know and informative for those that want to know more The official site Anonym zu www.afl.com.au/home/tabid/164/default.aspx Round 1 results 4 to 5 minute videos http://aflspace.com/2012/03/30/afl-m...-round-1-2012/ The rules & history Anonym zu en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rules_football In 2006, a total of 615,549 registered participants played Australian football in Australia. . Australian football is played in more than 30 countries around the world. In 2004, there were a total of over 25,000 participants outside of Australia. This has grown to about 35,000 people in 32 countries playing in structured competitions outside of Australia Australian rules is the national sport of Nauru. Although the 20.17 (137) to 16.19 (115) would seem to have given justification to the pre-season hype around Alastair Clarkson's men, the coach refused to buy in. To be fair Collingwood were missing a lot of key personal and had a 1st year Coach in charge who has won nothing but been 2nd in command under Mick Malthouse who has won plenty Hawthorn 2.1 10.6 14.10 20.17 (137) Collingwood 2.7 7.9 12.16 16.19 (115) Some things never change Richmond - the most supported club in Victoria starting the season with a thrashing after a great pre-season...choking choking choking Carlton 3.2 8.7 11.13 18.17 (125) Richmond 3.4 5.6 10.7 12.9 (81) Melbourne doing likewise to a resurgent Brisbane Lions (Queensland) The death of their stalwart Irish Born President Jim Stynes to a long bout of brain cancer who even today is acclaimed as the best import into the game ever probably had more of an effect than most will ever give due MELBOURNE 3.3 7.4 8.8 12.12 (78) BRISBANE LIONS 1.4 7.8 13.13 17.17 (119) The boys from the Western Australia(West Coast)showing last year was no fluke after rising from last to finish 4th last year. WESTERN BULLDOGS (Vic) 4.3 8.5 10.11 12.15(136) WEST COAST (W.A.) 6.2 10.6 16.9 21.10(87) When you win only 3 games out of a 22 game season as my team did last year you always want to face a team like St Kilda first up on your home patch They seem to find a way to lose when the other team really wants to win 3 grand finals in 4 years and no wins tells its own tale. PORT ADELAIDE (S.A) 5.2 8.6 11.9 13.11 (89) ST KILDA (VIC) 2.1 9.3 11.4 13.7 (85) Not surprisingly the 2 new teams (1 introduced last year and a another this) both lost badly ADELAIDE (S.A) 7.8 11.10 15.16 19.23 (137) GOLD COAST (QLD) 2nd year 3.1 5.3 8.6 10.8 (68) Greater Western Sydney (NSW) 1st year 1.2 3.3 3.4 5.7 (37) Sydney Swans (NSW) 4.1 8.4 13.8 14.16 (100) These games make the game what it is. 2 Victorian teams who have won the competition many times times neither of which are powerhouses today but they still put on these types of never say die matches on a regular basis because of their tradition which they beat into their younger players. NORTH MELBOURNE (VIC) 4.3 8.5 10.10 15.12 (102) ESSENDON (VIC) 3.2 9.8 13.14 14.20 (104) Use the thread as you wish gentlemen i might be its starter but i'm not its curator or overbearing lord...lol Last edited by buttsie; April 5th, 2012 at 07:10 AM.. GOOD LUCK on the THREAD
Sounds a good idea Buttsie ... and 'good luck' on your new thread mate.
Can't really say I've seen the Aussie game so much mate, but they look fit hard guys and every time I do see it on TV the crowds look huge. Gonna have to try and watch it a little more often. (apologies for my ignorance). If you do get a spare minute keep posting on the Football Thread mate, we all appreciate your input. Salut Mate! I.J.

Actually it was harder round than it looked given the number of close games Reigning premiers Geelong losing to Fremantle in Western Australia was not one I would have picked The age old adage of picking home teams is a sure in Not if those playing at home include Richmond,Melbourne,Greater Western Sydney or the Gold Coast Richmond had pre-season form Carlton none Melbourne with the Jim Stynes death...we've all seen mediocre teams pull one out As the new team of last year showed it wasnt beyond occasionally winning Port Adelaide winning a game straight off after 3 wins last year was a miracle After that i'd say your 5 stack up pretty well until you find out someone picked 8...lol As for tipping competitions it really is pure luck and i say that because when I ran a tipping competiton for 5 years the girls who hated football wouldnt even study the guide and they'd finish top 10 out of 30 every time. If you think about probability the best way to think is its a 1 in 2 chance All that extra info you take in versus the person who reads nothing will still make it a 1 in 2 chance more times than not |

By Collingwoods history premiers 1990,2010 ?, I'd wager you'd pencil in 2030 as their next premiership year...lol...with a lot of bridesmaids finishes in between As you hate Geelong so much Australias best fullback of this generation hints a boxing career is on the cards after football but only if he can fight against midgets Geelong defender Matthew Scarlett can accept a three-match ban for striking Fremantle's Hayden Ballantyne last Saturday....multiple angles of the blow...quite good watching for those that dislike them with a passion http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/spo...-over-afl-ban/ Last edited by buttsie; April 5th, 2012 at 07:23 AM.. |

I'm sure I'll find time for both Aussie rules which is actually originally an aboriginal game that us whites largely added a few rules to and made into a business doesnt have a lot of competition for crowds especially in the Aussie Rules heartland of the Southern States Even in the Rugby league heartland of Queensland & New South Wales Aussie Rules has slowly but surely got a hold after Rugby league was a huge headlining event Nationally due to the State orf origin series between the 2 States in the 80s before it slowly waned. That'll happen this weekend, I've a feeling Richmond will be the upset winners this round
The only reason I hate my hometown team so much, well 2 reasons. When I was a kid, dad too me to Kardinia Park for the 1st time, I was about 5 or 7, Geelong played Collingwood that day, Collingwood won, so I've been a Collingwood supporter since. The other reason, I found way back when there were more rounds played on a Saturday afternoon, If Geelong lost, there seemed to be less people out in the pubs and clubs that night, so it was a lot quicker getting served, and I liked hanging crap on anyone I knew . But I copped just as much back

If you ever needed proof contact sports were dangerous
and not soft as many espouse thesedays. 3rd death in 6 months Josh Henderson, aged in his early 20s, was playing a C-grade Australian Rules match for Mosman Park Western Australia Football Club in their first game of the year today when he was knocked as he went for the ball during the second quarter. "It was in the course of the game, a bump, going for the ball, nothing untoward and he died of a heart attack at the hospital about an hour later," club president Ian Earl said.
