Default 1fichier popularity or lack thereof?

That made me laugh, and I vaguely remember reading earlier in this thread or elsewhere a question from long ago about why 1fichier isn't more popular, why it isn't a household name like RG, K2S, etc. To me, the answer seems obvious. A huge subset of the users of a global file-hosting service are in the U.S., and we Amurkins are provincial about language: we like everything to be in English, and most of us don't care (and don't want to bother to learn) that "fichier" means "file". If the 1Filcher servers were also pointed to by, for instance, the domain name 1file.com or something similar, that would have attracted a lot more users among monolingual English-speakers.

(There's also the question of what "1 file" is supposed to mean in the first place, other than having it appear at the top of a sorted list of domain names, but maybe I'm getting too picky.)

It is pronounced 'un fichier' which can mean '1 file' or 'a file'.

Default Some marketing person wasn't having an especially bright day

Sure, I know what the literal meaning is, but what's the implication of the name supposed to be, as far as the users are concerned? That's what I was getting at. Even the name "afile.com" would have been preferable, vague as it is. (This web site is all about ... "a file"? Um, OK, I guess; whatever.)

But anyway, the deeper meaning, if any, is just a side issue. My main point is that the name is French rather than English, and we Amurkin bubbas, being quite insular, don't care much for Froggy stuff. So that's one answer to the old question of why 1Filcher (hee hee) isn't super-popular.

Well, first thing is this. I happen to be just as "Amurkin" as anyone else here, but I'm also of French descent..... so dropping the reference that you use for the French would be appreciated.

As far as the real reason why some hosts seem to be more "popular" than 1fichier, the answer is simple. For a long time now at forums like VEF etc, cash posters are in the majority because their aim is to make money by posting as many cash links as they can across the most forums they can find.

These posters are not going to use a host like 1fichier because they do not pay posters for downloads and you have to pay to renew premium accounts every year.

End result, Crapidgator, Crap2share, Filejoke, etc. links everywhere you look and relatively few 1fichier links to be found.

It's simple. The domain name fichier.com was already taken.

Think of the 1 as in "the number one file host"

Posting bot v1.03beta can confirm that biological creature Jenny48549 is correct. Widespread corruption in this unit's OS is by 23,486% estimated to be caused by VEF virus "Preferred hosts".

FWIW, I was trying to download this:

http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t27...tter-1996.html

from 1fichier from Firefox and hit all the problems indicated by folks in earlier posts on here. Disabling the adblockers etc did nothing except inflict a shitload of unwanted ads and popups.

However, pasting the 1fichier url into Edge, whilst still exposing me to a bunch of ads on the download page, did allow a straightforward, rapid and successful download.

I even ignored the bit about having to accept cookies etc. and it still downloaded. I can't claim to be especially happy, however. I like my ads, scripts, potential malware etc blocked by multiple barriers.

Downloading / uploading with browsers has always been occasionally hit & miss

My biggest issue with 1fichier on firefox was never being able to successfully upload
back when the other french host packupload existed - which i had no issues with.

Malware via ads (which is less prevalent than our security suites would have us believe)
can be avoided if you keep everything up to date - does take a bit of effort now free automatic software updaters are heading towards paid software as ad-revenue & bundling fails.

Malvertising needs - out of date / unpatched OSs , plugins , software
otherwise its got nothing to exploit.

Check All Your Software For Missing Updates

(this type of free software that doesnt automatically update appears to be the new norm)

Well, that was fun while it lasted. For one download.
Now I can't get anything from the site other than popups using Edge, Firefox, Pale Moon but Opera has just let me download a file at the cost of a lot of popups.

Shame, I liked 1fichier but I can't say I do now.

They need to make money.

Good speed and no popups = leeching = no money.

FileFactory gone the way of not being able to pay hosters. So they throttle speed so hosters cannot generate money. DepositFiles are doing the same.

They need to make money.

I wouldn’t like to provide a service and not get paid for it.

That’s the simple truth and many Fichier posters have paid to be able to post files.

You can’t keep taking without giving. It’s not working.
