Really. Which of the above would you say has more irresistible force?

Since The Sopranos was such a hit television series, it has brought almost all of its performers the greatest recognition. Karen Young appeared as an FBI agent for ten episodes between 2002-2006, and since my thinking was that this program represented her greatest claim to fame, once I noticed this modest VEF thread of hers had no mention of this enormous credit, I figured it appropriate to present views from how she appeared as the law officer.



These views are from Karen's very first Sopranos appearance, "Pie-o-My" (2002) and her very last, "Members Only" (2006). What struck me was her angelic face, even though her character could be cold and manipulative.



Since I've been preparing VEF posts, it's always a pleasure to go off and learn more about an actress who is unfamiliar, and then discover that she has taken her clothes off for the screen in the past. Since Karen looked so "innocent," it was a special pleasure to learn she has undressed not once, but several times throughout her career. Although the point of this thread was to present her appearance from The Sopranos, since there was nothing particularly sexy about the way she appeared on this show, I couldn't just let it go at that, could I?

What I learned about Karen Young was that she had a whole career behind her, and without being aware of who she was, naturally I've seen a good several of her numerous films. Another impressive thing about this lady is that she landed some big leading roles in known movies, as soon as she started out of the gate, her screen career beginning in 1983. (In other words, there was very little of that "working her way" up process; she started at the top, relatively speaking.)

For example, she appeared as the main female lead in 1984's ambitious and attention-getting (at the time) Birdy, and in what caused a sensation upon its release, 9½ Weeks, with Kim Basinger.

Among her credits was the highly mainstream Jaws: The Revenge from 1987, with Michael Caine, where she was the hot one; the main female role belonging to Lorraine Gary (pictured below), who appeared in the first two Jaws movies, as the wife of Chief Brody. Now a widow, she's upset that the new shark is deliberately targeting members of her family.



Heat is a 1986 film that unsuccessfully attempted to put Burt Reynolds' superstardom back on track, and a film I'm certainly familiar with, and I now dimly recall Karen as a lady friend of Burt's who gets badly beaten by beefy bad men, none of whom had any idea they would be in for serious trouble at the hands of Mr. Reynolds.




After the eighties, Karen steadily kept at it for the next couple of decades, and I'm also impressed by the scarcity of her television show roles (the mainstay for most screen performers; it's harder to make a living mainly from feature films). As examples, there was 1999's Joe the King (that would not be the derivative of King Kong, or Mighty Joe Young), about a boy who lapses into criminality with a now-older Karen Young playing the mother, as well as what comes across as the very powerful The Boy Who Cried Bitch (1991), about a psychotic boy who terrorizes his frail mother, played by Ms. Young.

It looks like Karen has shown her secrets nearly half a dozen times, bless her heart. At first (given the film I decided to focus on, coming up), it seemed she primarily made this concession after turning forty, and past her prime. Yet I was wrong; her first exposure was in her very first film, Deep in the Heart (1983), A.K.A. Handgun, a film with the familiar theme of a raped woman seeking vengeance.



Actually, what seems to have happened here was the familiar pattern of a beginning actress who pays the nudity price in order to get her break (luckily for the then twenty-five-year-old Karen, the big break was not just any movie role, but a starring role). Once she paid her dues, she wouldn't consider taking off her clothes again until enough years had passed, and she had little to prove or lose.




Regardless, Karen Young didn't simply toy with nudity (as Cameron Diaz did when she finally acquiesced toward her end run, where every frame of her limited nudity was calculated); in the last role where Karen appeared nude, she showed everything! This was in 2010, or two years before her screen retirement (although she finished off these last two years with a flurry of titles; given the hyperactivity, how odd it all came to a sudden stop in 2012), in Twelve Thirty, a film about a young man who has sexcapades with a mother and her two daughters. Luckily, she had a marvelous physique at the age of fifty-two (managing to pull this off), but regardless, she deserves a standing ovation for her refusal to compromise.
