He's a reminder of stuff you just read about in history books.

I frankly never thought I'd see anything like this here in my lifetime-- the process of de-personalizing the State has been going on for centuries, and the United States in particular was founded on a hostility to precisely his flavor of autocracy.

Its one thing to read about it in a book, you read about Napoleon's temper -- "what do I care about a million deaths, if it serves my glory?" -- Trump would say something like that, albeit without Napoleon's talent or appetite for work

Trump's sensibilities and instincts are of a spiteful and petty 18th century Prince, or indeed of some Persian Gulf Sheikh-- that's why he enjoyed his visit to Saudi so much.

People compare him to Andrew Jackson -- who shared a bad temper, but Jackson was not about lining his own pockets. Trump is a character for the ages.

He is far more dangerous than that. The Congressional majority is willfully looking the other way and passively obstructing any movement or effort to block his insane ideas. They are not going to do shit to stop him until he says or does something that is so profoundly wrong they can't avoid it any longer, at which time it will most likely be too late. All this is done to block the democrats from gaining power. The democrats are just as bad.

This is the most critical time in the history of this nation since 1973, possibly since 1962.

At those times, there was "an establishment", a kind of institutional gravitas.

JFK spoke on a number of occasions with President Eisenhower-- there are tapes of one of those calls. This was friendly, not partisan, JFK soliciting Ike's view of the Soviets and the Cubans . . . despite the fact that Ike didn't think much of JFK, it was a professional conversation.

Similarly in 1973, you have people doing their jobs, including Republicans.

Today its near Hutu on Tutsi tribal. The number of "principled conservatives" has dwindled to a handful . . . the alarm is great enough that 95 year old William Webster was moved to sign his name to a letter condemning Trump's actions.

If Trump beats Mueller-- and he may-- he will set about purging all the independent minded good government types and will replace them with lackeys.
