Yes its so easy when you're a pop/rock star/celebrity to sit on the sidelines and snipe-in the sure and certain comfort that your legion of fans will nod approvingly......then-on the rare occasions they actually choose to get their hands dirty and do something about it-they hit the brick wall of reality and day to day politics-ask Geldof-....ask Peter Garrett of 'Midnight Oil' who got himself elected and was actually a minister on one of the Aussie governments (a labour one I assume given his leanings.....IIRC he was a Green?) a few years back-he found out the hard way it's a lot easier singing about problems and issues than actually solving them....

A tenner + benefits in the early 80s was damned good money for lying in bed all day, you could buy a weeks fags, or a tank of petrol for a tenner back then.

If I'd been in power the young unemployed would have swept the streets for food stamps or got the option to join the army and go and be Armalite fodder in Belfast.

VEF used to have Like/Dislike buttons. They were removed because they were being abused as I recall.

What those die hard "Labour till I die" people keep forgetting or choosing to ignore due to their red blinkers is that Thatcher came to power as a result of a massive disillusionment with Labour in the 1970's. The country was in a right mess but listening to some people you would think the 70's were some golden age that we should be proud of, that is actually Bollocks. The country was strike ridden, with industries overrun by Fred Kite clones like Red Robbo to the extent of us being an international disgrace.
Under Thatcher the economy started to improve and even though the medicine hurt people remembered what it was like under Labour and voted Conservative until St Tony appeared, by which time the country had not seen the massive change they expected and believed it was time for a change of direction.
The rest as they say is history, after over a decade people got sick of Labour and voted blue again.
That may help explain Corbyn's rise. Too many Labour supporters are believing the nonsense that pre-Blair Labour run Britain was a socialist promised land

Heartwarming...

I don't think living on benefits is much good if you have any proper sense of pride in yourself, and I agree that "benefit culture" should be vigorously discouraged. I am not quite sure that people should be punished to neediing to claim benefits though; seems not quite right to me.

Thanks DTravel. How do you abuse a button either way, click it once it's gone. it just registers an opinion. I for one would "Thank" more if there was a "No Thanks" button. As it is If I disagree with a post I can just ignore it or reply.

Hmmm. Have you ever actually been on Employment Training scheme, or 'Extra Tenner' as it was known?

Prolly not, as you'd know that you only got that if you actually got out of bed and went on an E.T. scheme. You didn't get any extra if you didn't go on these schemes.

I presume that you'd be prepared to work for just dole money if you're boss asked you to?

Getting the young unemployed to sweep the streets for food stamps would've done the actual street-sweepers who actually worked for an actual wage, out of a job, and thus put them on the dole, and mabye they could've ended up doing their old job but just for food stamps.

When the number of those of working age in the population of a country is higher than the number of vacancies in that country, then you have unemployment. Treating the unemployed like shit just 'cos their number is higher tha that of vacancies, is typical short-sighted tory crap.
