And his real name was James Stewart. In the British Army the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders also wear Government tartan.

From your favourite book (or at least newspaper extracts) I found this alarming fact.
Fox tossing was a popular 17th century sport; the fox was fired into the air using a sling. You would have thought that people back then had better things to do than to shoot defenceless foxes, after all most were hunted to death.

Most foxes hunted to death? I dont think so, the fox has never been in danger of extinction in this country. The reason of course is that the wolf was hunted to extinction and the wolf was the only predator of the fox.

I didn't say extinction I said hunted to death, that is most are chased by the hounds until either exhausted or cornered and then killed. It is a barbaric and cruel 'sport' and I for one hate it that we are known for this throughout the world. I doubt foxes will ever become extinct but perhaps a bit more understanding of this animal might help.

Did you know...
The first magazine in the US to legally publish H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" in serial form was Cosmopolitan. Yes, that Cosmo.

In the construction of the White Star liner RMS. Titanic, they used over 3 million rivets, which alone weighed over 1200 tons!
Recent investigations suggest that the failure to use the correct quality rivets may have been the cause of the ship sinking - apart than hitting that iceberg that is!

That the human sense of sight is not continuous . the brain records images at 20 frames per second , much in the same manner as a film camera .

Speaking of the Titanic. Lew Grade British television mogul of the 70s & 80s here once made a film called "Raise the Titanic" and it sank badly-forgive the pun. He was once heard to say "it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic" the amount of money he spent on that 'disaster' movie

Greenman - foxhunting as a method of pest control was actually very effective. A fit fox with it's head up will always outpace a hound with it's nose down. The hunt took the sick, lame and lazy foxes and kept the wild fox population healthy.
There is no pleasant way of killing pests but the hunt either kills or it doesn't. Nothing is wounded to crawl away and die in agony. Oh I should point out that I have never ridden to hounds but I did go to a couple of meets when that shyster Blair was using Hunting to keep the trots occupied to see what the fuss was. |
