Australia looks beautiful to me, Anywhere you live, you will find something dangerous. For instance I live in Arizona and this what I have to contend with.

A variety of rattle snakes which are highly poisonous. Gila Monsters and Mexican beaded lizards also highly poisonous. Coyotes, bears and mountain lions. Scorpions, same as rattle snakes. Killer bees. Poisonous plants. Black widow and brown recluse spiders. Dust storms, rain storms and lightning storms which make being outside or driving hazardous. Illegal aliens, gun and drug smugglers and worst of all in the Tucson area left wing liberals.

My point is you are always in danger from something, just act accordingly.

I wore a fly hood when they got bad. Its a really cheap way to keep your sanity . . . maybe we were lucky, but only a few places out west were really bad, a bit north of Geraldton.

Have a drink in Mole Creek Hotel & Tassie Tiger Bar while you're at it . . . the publican is more than happy to tell you that they're out there, and to pour you beer; you may not have much luck with the Tiger, but the beer is definitely real

Default Wet Coast wilderness (not a typo, more a description)

If there are any Thylacines left, odds are they are in some remote area of Tasmania's West Coast wilderness.
As recently as the seventies, large south western areas were unmapped.

Very inhospitable area. Very wet. Lots of Horizontal Scrub, March flies (they bite), leeches and god knows what else.

We had a near fly free summer in these parts of Australia. I think it was too hot for them but now they are everywhere!

March Flies -- (in American, "horse flies") -- nasty. You know what they do? They don't have a mouth that can suck blood like a mosquito, they slash you, and then lap up the blood that pools. Basically, they stab you . . .

hmmm... do you get these things in AUS? The word for them here is "deer fly", and they arrive mostly after the mosquitos die, some time in August

You only get them in forests

deerflies are bad to be sure. but the worst part if I (suddenly) lived in Australia is that it would be the fall and I would be facing another winter! I don't know how cold it gets down under, but it has been too cold for my taste lately.

I looked them up -- certainly familiar with the term "deer fly", but I can't say that I've ever seen one.

They have amazing eyes.

found world wide, I think . . .

Oz has plenty of unique critter-- particularly among the ants where stuff that's been extinct everywhere else for a long time, primitive ants that are barely distinct from wasps have survived.
