Well I was honest enough to stick a Leslie Charteris book in; I enjoy all his pre- 1940 works.

Many say that about "Emma" but I found it rather dull. Lots of conversations and not much happening - and without the humour of P&P.

I am pleased by how many people have listed "Dracula". I think that if you have only watched the silly films, you would have no idea about how well this epistolary novel is written and constructed.

He also did one on Sgt Pepper (also on YouTube) but it was less interesting.
Come, come Schwenck - a massive Beatles fanatic like me has both of those, and many others, permanently recorded in his vast library of Fab Four stuff.

I have some Lewisohn books too, signed by Sir George Martin whom I met when a journo friend of mine interviewed him. They are a good read.

Pride and prejudice has the most laugh out loud moments, particularly in the first half, and I would suggest as the first of her works that anyone wishing to read an Austen novel try. Emma, though, is her masterpiece IMO. There isn't a wasted scene, and the humour is still there, but more subtle.

Mr. Knightley seemed to be trying not to smile; and succeeded without difficulty, upon Mrs. Elton's beginning to talk to him.

As a longstanding fan of her work, it is pleasing to see quite a few picking one or other of her novels.

Really like these. Wonder where it's going next though, given the ending of Lies Sleeping.
