Lyrics can be seen as literature.
Often a song's lyrics can manage to capture our feelings at certain times, far more so than traditional literature. Dylan's lyrics are more memorable than many others though, but I wouldn't say he was the greatest living lyricist. I mainly listen to rock/metal music so am probably blissfully unaware of many talented lyricists out there. The Nobel Prize nominations committee tried something off centre to try and show they are not out of touch, did it work though?

Dylan is meaningless.
Nothing that he puts out punches you in the gut. It's all just luvverly safe folk rock. Try this to take you out of his sad media-friendly comfort zone: The Police - Invisible Sun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VuDjJ9KIxM Genuinely disturbing and makes you think.

Bob Dylan: Nobel Literature Prize left me speechless
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37806639 The Committee should have done a bit of research and realised that unlike the future Nobel Peace Prize winners The Kardashians he is a very private person and does not actively seek to screw every bit of publicity he can
