No-one really knows why it's called a quid, but the favourite theory seems to be that it's a derivative of "Quid Pro Quo", something for something. Give me a quid and I'll give you something for it.

Ok I read that; makes sense. Part 2 of my question is also a curiosity I have never been able to ask a Brit: is a quid slang for a clump of boogers in the UK?

I know I am laughing as I type this but I really was, and kind of am, disgusted every time I watch British TV and here this term.

Flicking a bogie is the same as your booger I believe and snot is the more runnier type.
Not sure how accurate this is but this might help to explain quid origins:

I've never heard the word quid used for snot, reading your post was the first time.

I live in the midwest so probably just something local; but a quid was slang for booger usually expelled.

Greenman's definitions provide with a clue where hock a quid could evolve from: one definition was: A lump of tobacco for chewing. One chews and spits tobacco a lot here in the midwest so that could be the "evolution" of the term quid.

Thanks for input. Curiosity.

Likewise-and I've been exposed to a wide range of english vernaculars over my lifetime-both directly and on TV.....it would seem to be a very localised US meaning to the word.....

I had no idea what 'hock a logie' was until I saw it in Wayne's World-it is pretty disgusting but then so is flicking a bogie from your nose and unfortunately it being sticky enough to land somewhere and being picked up on someone's shoe or clothes.
Like most words they are lost in translation and sometimes become urban myth-style things-quid is probably one of those.

Is it possible to be a candidate to the American Presidency without the help of lobbies or being extremely rich?

If not, are you not preoccupied by this form of democracy that is more a plutocracy than a real democracy.
