Like most on here ,I planned my porn purchases in a way that would make a military general jealous .
Always far away , checking no one else was in the shop ,and preferably from a middle aged /old woman .
My stomach would turn over , my heart would pound ,I'd make sure I had the right money , in-out ,and away LOL
Sometimes ,I'd feel like I had a look of disgust from the woman behind the counter ,but that added to the thrill .

Used to ride my bike to a news-stand on the very busy main street on my way home. (Think busy Main St if you are from a small or medium sized town or the high street if you are a UK-er.) My middle-school was a 45 minute ride to the other side of town so nobody from my neighborhood would normally be over there. This was in the mid-80's in suburban So Cal.

My allowance back then was pretty pitiful at maybe $5 every week or two if I was lucky. I would use my scrounged up allowance and/or couch-cushion money to pick up the occasional Playboy or Penthouse if the covergirl was especially hot and/or irresistible. Always felt like a pretty big gamble at $4.00 or $4.50 a shot, especially when you couldn't have a quick browse to see if that issue was a hit or a miss. Heck that price still seems pretty steep to me, even in today's dollars. Guess that makes me a cheap bastard. Thankfully most issues were awesome though it was always painful to buy one and discover it was a dud.

The dudes working the news-stand were always about 10-15 years older than me which at that age seemed immense. I'd find myself thinking that I bet they knew my older siblings. My heart would always be racing as I'd finally dig up the nerve to walk up and ask for the mag I wanted. There were times I was sure my pounding heart was audible to everyone around and that it would leap out of my chest at any second. I don't think I would call it a turn-on at all, but there was definitely a terrifying adrenaline rush involved in each transaction.

I was always sure someone driving by on the busy road would recognize me, freak-out and call my parents or older siblings or else they'd see my school uniform and call my school. I was also sure that someone from my class would see me there, figure out what I was doing and make my school life a living hell.

Happily the dudes there were almost always cool about my requests and they'd hand me my purchase rolled up and off to the side where I could quickly slide them into my backpack and ride my bike home. If I'd had the least bit of perspective back then I'd have realized that I wasn't the only 13-14 year-old in town who liked to buy the occasional Playboy or Penthouse and these guys working the newsstand must have had a dozen or more customers like me every day.

I vividly remember buying the Madonna Penthouse issue, the Kathy Shower Playboy issue, the July 85 Hope Marie Carlton Playboy issue with Tracy Vaccaro in suspenders on the cover, the Vanna White newsstand special, the Feb 86 Penthouse issue with the incredible Michelle Walker and the March 86 Playboy with Sally Field on the cover and the amazing Kim Morris as the CF. Good times!

When I went into high school and didn't find myself riding through that part of town anymore and had to find a new vendor. I found a liquor store about 2 miles from home that had a huge selection of magazines right between the front door and the register. Talk about nerve-racking, loitering at a porn magazine rack where every entering customer would easily see you as well as the cash register clerk. At least I came to find that in the early afternoons there wasn't much trafffic. The place was full of candy and soda as well as heavy liquor so my presence wouldn't necessarily raise eyebrows. Fortunately the clerk at the register was another decent 30-ish dude and he let me browse the mags a bit so I could make an informed choice as to the best magazine to spend my money on that particular month. That's when I discovered Club magazine with Samantha Fox appearing on the cover seemingly every other month. Yummy! Also made the occasional Hustler purchase but that was pretty rare. It was nice to find a place where you could buy mags where you didn't feel exposed to every car and pedestrian passing by and without each transaction feeling like you were going over the top like a WW1 infantry charge into machine gun fire.

I kept going to this liquor store for about a year until the owner canned the afternoon guy for selling alcohol to minors (not me). Once the grizzled, 60-ish owner took over working the afternoon shift himself it was like being kicked out of Shangri-La. The owner did not care for my 15 year-old presence lurking at the mag stand by the register and quickly made it clear that the browsing policy was over. I'm sure the owner probably felt like he was under a microscope after his clerk put his liquor license in danger so I can't blame the guy but it was a bummer all the same. He'd still sell me mags but didn't want me in the store for more than 1-2 minutes so I didn't scare away the yuppies coming by for their Bartles and Jaymes wine coolers.

It wasn't long after that I just coasted on the large magazine collection I had built up and kept stored in the large, locked foot-locker at the end of my bed. (Average 1-2 new mags a month for 3-4 years becomes quite a storage problem when you never throw any away.) I guess I just grew tired of being treated like I had the plague each time I went to the liquor store and I had a heck of a collection to keep me busy by that point. Then once the 80's passed and I was in college I could save time, money and anxiety by just subscribing to whatever I wanted.

Fond memories of those old days as a teen buying naughty mags when I was afraid of my own shadow and slowly learned to overcome my fears.
