I was one of those classic "and a newspaper too" porn mag buyers. The newspaper's sole task was to be an innocent envelope.

I hated buying them. Thankfully though, a couple of years after I became old enough to buy them, the internet started to take off, and I could find all my porn online. Being gay and not "out" to anyone yet, I felt like I was basically outing myself to the cashiers by buying Hustler and other skin mags which featured guys too, vs. stuff like Playboy. Plus I had to stand there and go through several mags to make sure it was an issue worth even getting - I'm not wasting $7+ on an issue for only a few pages with guys I'm not interested at all.

One of the worst tricks the paul Raymond titles used to pull was putting a girl on the cover that wasn't in the magazine. Usually she'd be in it next month so you had to come back and go through the process all over again. I could never flick through a magazine in a shop though. |

Oh Yes, I can relate to that. Some of the porn shops had the mags in plastic covers so you were buying blind. I soon stopped doing that. I guess a lot of others did too because the practice disappeared and you could have a look through before buying. Even so I had my disappointments. I hated the guy behind the counter watching you and what you were looking at, so I hurried my purchases more than I should have done. And the mags were really expensive in dollars of the day.

It's great reading all these stories and so many I can relate to.
One of the best jobs I had when I was still at school was in the local newsagents during the holidays. It was a family run business - husband and wife. While it was a small place, they had a collection of mags in the corner, up top, near the back. When I first started and with the hours I worked, I could never find myself alone to take a closer look. Plus, the wife was a close friend of my mothers. Christ, it was annoying. I vividly remember this issue of Penthouse driving me insane... Oddly enough, the mags didn't really sell that well. The occasional Playboy and Mayfair. It was funny catching guys trying to take a look and not get caught, but I felt their frustration. Eventually though, things got a little better -my boss, thank-god and may he rest-in-peace, trusted me with the job of handling the remainder stock, which was all done out the back, on my own. This entailed collecting unsold stock, indexing titles, checking on condition, then boxing up to send back to the wholesaler. Even at $5 an hour, it was the best job a 15 year could have. |

Even worse was wanting to see the "under the counter" stuff. The guys behind the counter were real gangster types and I could never contemplate asking for what I really wanted and facing their sneers. I would wait for trips to the big city where most things were at least on show. Nowadays you can just google anything, and reading material you can buy on Amazon. In the old days buying porn was never "a turn on" for me, just something that had to be endured.

I always tried to buy from shops where ladies were serving. When i found my ideal "under the counter" shop, the lady of the shop was much more sympathetic and understanding

That's the ultimate kick in the dick with mags, movies, websites, etc. it's pushed that you're gonna get "x" in it only to find out that's not the case or they strongly underachieved and it feels like you wasted money. |

Saturday afternoon , seeing classy grey haired lady doing her shopping , picking up dildos etc often thought bout her what she done after
