Default AJ Press - Akagi - Volume 1

Decided to splash out and buy the second of the 2 titles on Akagi
to complete the set on the carrier

I decided to get the cheapest book , that was available online
( e-bay sometimes is a cheaper source , but not for this rare title
- the only seller wanted £113.69 (including postage )

I managed to get my copy for £ 32 , plus postage from abe books
from a Swedish Bookseller -
there was a earlier title - but was in Polish Language only from AJ Press
I show the details of it below , for interest , if you are into Warships

Default Akagi Volume 1 AJ press

The Book arrived today , from Sweden -
well worth the money - it goes over the development of Japanese Naval Aviation , and the help the Royal Navy gave them to get started .
Then it talks about the 8 - 8 Plan ( 8 Battleships and 8 Battlecruisers )
that they had planned or laid down by 1922 , which were cancelled by the Washington naval Treaty - leaving only Nagato and Mutsu , and 2 converted Battlecruiser Hulls ( Amagi and Akagi ) to be turned into
Aircraft-carriers - however the earthquake in Tokyo wrecked the Amagi Hull , forced them to use the incomplete Kaga Hull instead .

I will say there are a lot of interesting photos and line drawings of the
Kaga and Tosa , and American Lexington Class ships planned as a Battlecruiser - then when they were laid down , and then under construction .

However there are no photos of the Akagi ( or Amagi ) - probably due to large scale destruction of records following 1945 , following the Japanese Defeat ( to deprive the Americans of secrets ) .

You do get really rare photos of the Tosa and Kaga however , and they are shown and very nice too .
Only after launch , and conversion to a carrier , do you get photos of the Akagi - however the book looks really good , and I look forward to reading it when I have spare time this week
(I am taking this week off as a Holiday )
anyway , I took photos of the Ship Plans ( size A1 !! - and HUGE )
which would be ideal for a Modeller - and useful .
( Hasegawa does the Akagi in 1/350 scale )

Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon ~ classic horror tale from 1973, concerns a young married couple fleeing the big city to a rural town in New England, only to realize too late that town is filled with pagans whose lives revolve around the growing and harvesting of corn. This was made into a tv mini series in '78 that starred Bette Davis and Rosanna Arquette, called The Dark Secret of Harvest Home.

Now we know where Stephen King lifted his idea for Children of the Corn from

Went on a 'Book-Binge' last weekend.
Sandford / Cussler / Robb / Fry / Smith etc

Except for Stephen Fry, they are all books that one can read with one eye open and the brain still operating in the Real World.

Ideal for Public Transport. Will report back . . .

Kansas is more about the wheat. Nebraska is where the corn is at. Though each state grows both crops.

It would be kind of hard to have a horror story about sacrifice in the wheatfields, since you could see everything coming a long ways off.

You could have a horror story about cereal killers though.

James Ellroy - Silent Terror (1986)

Told in a first-person narrative style, Ellroy's Silent Terror (or Killer on the Road, as known in later publications) deals with the brutal serial killer Michael Martin Plunkett. The story is told from his point of view, written as memoirs he intends to publish in prison.

Not sure what to expect but let's see where this leads. I got 15 Ellroy novels for €10 recently and will go through some of them during the next couple of months. His L.A. Quartet is all I've read so far.
