Extremely unlikely. They'd have to still have the original loops in 16mm or better and in pristine condition. You can't get Hi-Def out of an 8mm loop. It's impossible. Not enough resolution to work with.
This isn't like a handful of films by a few select directors who kept their prints all these years. Loop production...even Swedish Erotica loop production...was a haphazard business. We (VEF as whole) still haven't been able to track down every loop SE put out and it's not for lack of trying. I doubt they kept the prints after they did the original VHS transfers in the 80s. This may be why they did VHS transfers to DVD instead of re-digitizing the footage in the 90s and 2000s. That and because they're penny pinchers. Cheaper to do a VHS transfer than re-digitize. Not enough of a market for it...especially with the wholesale ripping and file sharing that goes on now. Even Vinegar Syndrome can't be making much off those high quality Blu-Ray/2K digitization jobs they've put out. If whoever controls the SE brand now (it has been owned by several entities) never released all the photo shoots they did for the magazine versions of the loops (something I wish they had done), they'll never do Blu-Ray. 8MM scans are possible to become HD
You say, it is impossible ?,
there are only solutions. If you have the original 8MM film the scan rate can be increased to add more pixels and enhance the definition, only if the source material is well lit and in focus, it would be far better than any print crunched to VHS and so on. Quote:

There was a similar discussion on another thread where someone was wondering why we don't routinely do gigabyte scans. You can't extract information that isn't there, and 8mm is a very tiny frame, scanning it a some super high resolution just gives a big file of low resolution video. There is academic work in imagining science, where you basically use sequences of frames and knowledge of what a higher resolution scene would look like to bootstrap superresolution re-renders of low quality source. This is not commercially available at present, and its a _lot_ more involved than just "increasing the scan rate". Look up "super resolution image reconstruction" if you're interested. As a rule of thumb, high quality 8 mm film generally is fully scanned -- meaning there's no more information to be obtained-- at 1080 lines, which is DVD quality. Most adult material wouldn't even be of that quality . . . |

Yeah, I hate to say it also but this seems highly unlikely. That's not to say there aren't some great quality loops out there though. Vinegar Syndrome, for example, did a few transfers of Swedish Erotica loops for their exploitation.tv site some time ago and they look REALLY great btw. You can find one posted by me HERE and some others floating around the SE thread. I only really wish they had access/could've done more of them. The few that they did add to their streaming service were ALL great looking and top-notch quality though. After many hours of browsing it seems very scarce to come across loops that look so great IMO, so it doesn't give me much hope to find more like these...though by all means I'd LOVE to.

I agree with DARPA (we have had these discussions in the past) and the others about it being unlikely.
While there are some good rigs out there ( see http://www.moviestuff.tv/universal_web_ad.html) the 8mm sources floating around aren't sharp (there are some exceptions I would know I own over 1500 8mm films) . Without the original 16mm that SE shot too (that others mentioned were the source for the VHS transfers and why they are a bit better) we aren't going to see them get much better. I have a Super8 version of Topless Dancer and I know if I transfer it with a 1080p rig it will just be a big version with the same clarity of the version I have at 480p. Admittedly it would look better played full screen on a 60" TV . But it won't look like the VS transfers from 35mm film. I think much of theirs is from original negatives which is an even better source. At some point I will have a 1080p rig and then we can do a compare from something I did at 480p and we'll discuss it.

Yeah...the bottom line is the source material has to have the detail to extract for you to be able to extract it. 8mm just does not get you there. You might find a better quality print with better color (and if you're really lucky no serious scratches) that when digitized at high def and then converted down to 480p might look marginally better. But the key word is "marginally".
Believe me, I really wish it wasn't so. But I came face to face with that reality 17 years ago when I put an 8mm film under a microscope. Back then I was looking to use a flatbed scanner to try and scan individual frames of loops I had not found SE Mag photoshoots for. One look in that microscope revealed the blurry truth. |
