Copa Libertadores 2nd leg will be played outside Argentina on 8 or 9 December. Favourite venue is Abu Dhabi with the winners staying in location to compete in World Club Cup which starts 12 December.

They should ban the crowds from these games and play them behind closed doors
until they get the message

No more mindless violence or you lose out big time

Maybe Team buses need to be made like their entering a war zone

The coach attack was some form of revenge by a fan base run mafia style. A couple of days earlier police had raided houses and along with arrests confiscated about £200 thousand and 300+ match day tickets.
A case of don't mess with us or else.

You also have to factor in the ban on away fans at any game, which was introduced four or five years ago, I believe its still in place, so the only target for home thugs is the away team bus or law enforcement.

Wink

Sounds like the same kind of behaviour you'd expect from the Italian Ultras

If Argentina is smart - threaten to sell the game to the Middle east rich - for ever
if trouble ever occurs again

Its amazing how the dickheads who claim to be loyal fans will always target a big event
with this kind of nonsense

Default I have my finger crossed...

for the UCSD Tritons women's soccer team. In about 5 hours they will be playing a semi-final game, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-30s (not weather we see much of on the west coast.) They will be playing Bridgeport, who have 18(!) foreign players on their roster.

On a positive note, this reminds me of when the 2001 Tritons, who had to play in the semi finals and finals against teams with rosters loaded with foreign national team players (Northern Kentucky University and Christian Brothers University - CBU started 9 foreign national team players and also had Missy Gregg, who moved down from division I Dayton University - she scored 72 goals in 20 games that year; and CBU won the championship in 2002.)

And, the team still has hovering over them the specter of not knowing who the head coach will be next year: UCSD has critical decision to make in search for women's soccer coach

It's not about a PayWall .... foots.

It's about European legislation on customer's rights.

Firms just can't harvest info from readers, without the reader/user acknowlidging it. These web sites that want European readers, ask them to 'opt-in' to cookie and tracking stuff.

Hence, Santee and other US readers are not asked, as per normal, and can view as much as they like.
The Washington Post and NYT etc, have a bridge that you have to cross, 'allowing' them to plant stuff with your agreement.
Others just aren't bothered and just block Euro access.

UCSD has critical decision to make in search for women's soccer coach

Kristin Jones, who was an assistant to Brian McManus for 14 years, has led UC San Diego into this year's Final Four. After a coaching shakeup in which McManus resigned, Jones said she has applied to be the permanent head coach beginning next season. (Derrick Tuskan / UC San Diego)

Coaching hires at the NCAA Division II level usually happen without public scrutiny or fanfare.

That will not be the case when UC San Diego selects the next head coach of its women’s soccer team.

In August, UCSD asked 31-year head coach Brian McManus to resign before the season for what the university referenced as “possible violations of NCAA regulations.” Despite an extensive public records request by the Union-Tribune, the university has not produced documents that might shed further light on the matter.

McManus has told the Union-Tribune that the violations involved buying pizza for players after games.

The school’s athletic administration demoted Kristin Jones, who had become McManus’ associate head coach in 2015, and took disciplinary action against Jones and assistant Trent Painter. Both were supposed to serve four-game suspensions during the season.

In the aftermath of McManus’ departure, UCSD Athletic Director Earl Edwards said a national search would be conducted to find a new head coach. He reiterated that last week.

Now, the school has the dilemma of whether to hire an outside person to lead a successful program headed for Division I status, or retain the popular coach known as “Jonesy,” who played on two national championship teams at UCSD and has guided the Tritons (19-2-2) to a Final Four appearance that begins Thursday in Pittsburgh.

The head coach job opening has been officially posted by UCSD, with an application deadline of Dec. 4 and a salary range of $80,000 to $115,000. McManus was set to make $82,272 this season, a roughly $5,000 raise from a year ago. Jones is currently earning $40,000 under the payroll title of “Coach Asst 3.”

When a new coach is hired, emotions will run high, no matter the decision.

“If she’s not given it, it’s a travesty,” McManus said this week.

“Quite honestly, there are going to be a great amount of people who apply for it. But there’s nobody who knows more about UCSD and how this team works than Jonesy.”

Jones and McManus have remained close to the school’s soccer alumni, which showed up in force at games after McManus’ ouster. They continue to offer staunch support for Jones. McManus and at least a dozen former players are expected to be on hand in Pittsburgh.

“Alumni get to be louder,” Natasha Belak-Berger, a former UCSD forward who graduated in 2009, said with a laugh.

“If (Jones) isn’t retained, it would be a tragedy,” she said. “She has taken one of the hardest circumstances a coach could have walked into and handled it so gracefully, and done such a fantastic job. To me, it shouldn’t be a question. She has the support of Brian and the girls (on the team) and the alumni. Actions speak louder than words.”

Jones, who was McManus’ assistant for 14 seasons, said she has had little time to ponder the future. She said that after being “up and down” about a decision to apply for the head coaching job, she has done so.

“This program means a lot to me,” Jones said. “I hope I was able to show them what I’m capable of doing this year. I hope I’m in the mix when all is said and done. It’s in the hands of the department. Either way it goes, I’m just very proud of what we were able to accomplish this year. It’s been a fun ride.”

Jones has the backing of some influential players.

“I feel strongly about it. I would love for her to continue,” said senior forward Mary Reilly. “I think it would be heartbreaking if this team were to continue next year without Jonesy or the people who have a connection to the legacy that Brian left after 30 years.”

Added junior redshirt midfielder Natalie Saddic, who is expected to be a key returner next season, “Jonesy has done so much work. She did most of the individual coaching, and Brian excelled at the team dynamic.

“What I love about Jonesy is how emotionally invested she is. She wants us all to succeed, and she’s in it with us.”

The UCSD administration’s conundrum will be weighing Jones’ UCSD ties and coaching success against the flashier resumes that might come along from bigger names or current Division I assistants who see a job near the ocean in La Jolla, at a strong academic school, highly appealing.

“We’ll do a national search. Jonesy will be a part of it, I’m sure,” Edwards said. “We’ll see how it plays out.”

Asked about his thoughts on the Tritons reaching the Final Four, the athletic director said, “It’s great. It’s actually, from my perspective, somewhat expected, knowing the athletes and coaching staff we have.

“Thus far, it couldn’t have been a better season. What else could we have done that wasn’t? There’s only one thing left, and that’s a national championship.”

The Union-Tribune submitted a request with the university under the California Public Records Act on Aug. 9, just hours after the announcement that McManus had resigned. The university responded Aug. 20, saying it targeted Oct. 26 — the day before the end of the regular season — to fulfill the request.

The request ranged from contracts for McManus and Jones, as well as the internal report that led to his departure, correspondence with the NCAA about potential rules violations and emails between athletic department staffers about the issue.

On Oct. 30, after 82 days, the university provided employment contracts — items that at SDSU and other universities are routinely produced in a matter of days, if not hours. A letter that day from Paula Johnson, the director of UCSD’s Policy and Records Administration department, said: “The remainder of your request is in progress. I anticipate another partial production of records will be sent to you by Nov. 19.”

More than a week later, no further documents have been released. As of Wednesday, 111 days have passed since the initial request.

On Tuesday, Johnson said in an email: “We are making every effort to get the records prepared for release to you by the end of next week.”

That means the university won’t produce the potentially most sensitive documents until after the soccer season or the head coaching job’s application deadline.
