Shearer's look, a mixture of disbelief and disgust that a manager could be so stupid, spoke more than words ever could.
Hoddle managed his team in the way he played attacking football as a player. It helped that the system he inherited from Venables was amenable to this.

Sven on the other hand had that Italian system of defensiveness with launching on the counter attack. I have a lot of time for Sven. He got England to qualify for major championships and got the team to the quarter finals.

Sven had potentially the most talented squad since the late 60's but we still stumbled and under-achieved woefully. How much of this was down to the manager's mindset (Rio clearly was not impressed) and how much down to the players' conceited attititude that they 'deserved' success will remain conjecture. His player selection showed a blinkered, stubborn approach. I suspect he was like Wenger, who never delivered on the European stage - what made him a good manager also stopped him from being a great one. His refusal to drop Beckham, when the lad wasn't performing and his head was clearly all over the place, was risible.

Final round of matches with still something to play for some.
Group C can Australia beat Peru and hope France remove the Danes for them.
Group D Nigeria to upset the applecart ?
Group E expecting Brazil & Swiss to qualify or can Serbia throw a spanner in the works?
Group F will get interesting is Sweden & Germany win.
Group H Colombia v Senegal should prove interesting, as both have beaten Poland, leaving the door ajar for Japan.
The Danes have been a bit disappointing and the Aussies typically tenacious but lacking in quality.
Nigeria look decent when they put their game heads on...I think Serbia have been hard done by. That won't save them but I'd still like to see them go through.
Sweden really bottled it against Germany - Germany's winner was, like Ronaldo's equalizer against Spain, a perfectly executed let-down for everyone else.
Poland have been staggeringly awful.
Columbia can certainly play a bit and the match against Senegal might be a cracker, and test VAR to it's limits. If the England Belgium game turns out to be a 'friendly' after coasting through against weak opposition, both could be in for a rude awakening in the next round.

.....and oscar goes to Neymar! What an asshole. I loved the Brazilian football, but that son of a bitch ruined the team.....

I think that England is the new Worl Cup winner.

Told some relatives before the tournament began that England would reach the Final -
'In your dreams', they replied.
Still believe they will & may even lift that famous trophy. However, they all need to give 100% effort/concentration & at times some have not been giving that.
England should have scored 10 or more against Panama but spent far too much time simply walking with the ball & passing without going forward. The real test for England (& others) is still to come.

Well Sven was the first manager to do the league/cup double in three countries and also won the Uefa Cup and Cup Winners Cup as a manager.

As for the Golden generation that seemed to be more press hype and reasons for entitlement. The players were good but could not deliver on the big stage.

Those players were there after Sven left and when the FA bought British and appointed McLaren those players could not even qualify for a major championship.

VAR - there to ensure the right decision is arrived at. Enrique Caceres thinks otherwise. Astonishing incompetency.

I'd contend that Sven only had one enviable achievement as England manager:
