Russian criminals were used to be sent to Siberia since a long time before the Soviets.

I bought a book of pictures about Siberia made in 1996. Incredible the cultures there are there.
There are small "almost tribal" families... in the middle of ... nowhere, living in huts.
They look like mogols or chineses.

Did you know that there are rivers in Siberia that only had a vertical drop of 100 meters on a distance of 4000 kilometers?

We could can put full USA with Alaska in Siberia without touching any borders of this area.

Does the population dislike that much the Communism?

The Russian Communists greatly disappointed the people in 1996, when the party leader consciously ceded the presidency to Yeltsin. In the Russian Communist party is a lot of dollar millionaires. The main function of this political party is to create the visibility of the opposition using left - wing rhetoric.

How would you economically describe Putin? As a socio-liberal, a socio-democrat, a centrist, a modern communist?

Its economic policy is to make the rich richer. During his reign, the number of ultra-rich grew 10 times. In today's Russia in the hands of oligarchs and other rich people concentrated 77% of the country's wealth. According to official statistics, 13.7% of the population live below the poverty line.

Yes, they were isolated out there, but could thrive. Stalin used to go on fishing trips, during his exile. He got to live in an actual house out there too, with the peasants.

When Stalin got in charge, he retained the Siberian gulags, but made sure there was no fishing, and that there was a lot less food and a lot more work for those he got annoyed with and sent off to Siberian summer camp.

^ Russia seems to be devolving back to its historic norm, with a czar, and a bunch of rich nobles, and below them the poverty-raddled and trampled upon peasantry.

Putin being the czar, the oligarchs being the grand dukes, and other nobles, and the peasants being - well, peasants.

Perhaps this is the only system under which Russia can be stable, long term. You have to follow your instincts and indulge your national character, I guess.

At least the peasants won't get shot in the back of the neck for looking cross-eyed at a picture of Putin, these days.

Today in the USA, you still kill people in jail. Some of them are totally innocent.

3/25/18 (yesterday) Fareed Zakaria GPS. Had a most interesting show about Putin and his opponents. Season 10 episode 12.
Look it up Palo and refute it. I am sure you will be able to. After all Putin and Russia never do anything wrong in your eyes.

You're right, but only in part. Russia cannot be stable and long-term in such conditions. Now there is no iron curtain, many Russians go abroad and see another life there. In Russia, almost everyone has the Internet, it is an alternative to the official TV, which tells that the country is all right. For many years, the authorities have been able to contain discontent, using huge revenues from oil and gas exports, but now these revenues are decreasing. The government is putting pressure on the people to raise as much money as possible. All this is fraught with a new social explosion.
