Tomasz Stańko
"Tomasz Stańko nie żyje" = literally "Tomasz Stańko doesn't live". That's the usual expression in Poland, rather than "is dead" or "passed out" to announce a decease. Tomasz Stańko, dead yesterday at 76 old, wasn't only a precursor in East Europe but a great composer, muscian, trumpeter and human being. European jazz, or music simply, will miss one of its gems. He was one of the heros of what we call now "The Baltic jazz" but he played with all the biggest : Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Lester Bowie, David Murray, Gary Peacock, Jan Garbarek, Cecil Taylor... I had a special affection for him and listened to him for decades. He said : "The spirit of Polish melancholy is in my blood". RIP.
