Spiel on Noel Neill
Chancing upon this thread about Noel Neill led to the desire to give y'all a Noel Neill story. It was not my intention to prepare a Noel post otherwise, so this means I need to dig up some images that hopefully have not already been featured.
In a 2010 post by Member "Bobk" on the first page, there was this: "Noel was one of the first of the 1950's TV performers to do college tours in the 1970's." Great Caesar's Ghost, I attended one of those. I didn't even know who Noel Neill was. The only thing that attracted me was the way she was sold for the event, tied in with "Superman." Not to say I had not seen episodes of the television series, but I guess the actress I associated with Lois Lane from that series was Phyllis Coates. So I was pretty ignorant about Ms. Neill. (Let me try and 'splain further. It's not that I was unaware of the second Lois Lane, but I rejected her. First impressions count, and to me, the "real" Lois was Phyllis Coates. Besides, Phyllis, just from her appearance, had an "edge" to her; Phyllis had spunk. Lois Lane is a character with spunk. The "pseudo" Lois Lane who replaced Phyllis had no spunk. The replacement emanated peaches and cream, all sugar and no spice.) (By the way, I have just learned Phyllis Coates is... still with us, at age ninety-four? How interesting that she appears to have been invisible, and not capitalizing, to my knowledge, on the hoopla over Superman since the first Christopher Reeve movie. I see from her filmography that she showed up in an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, in 1994.) Getting back to Noel Neill, on stage walked this very lovely woman in a (sort of) form-fitting skirt and jacket, and I thought, Great Caesar's Boast, that is one fine looking broad. Publicity shots of Noel, exploiting a "pirate" motif... I suppose. When she spoke, there was a very bubbly, and really nice person in there. That was rather obvious. Great Caesar's Toast, I suppose you could say I was engrossed. (I was under twenty. She was in her early fifties. The gap meant absolutely nothing.) For some reason, after the event, I found myself in a room with others and the star attraction. When I had Ms. Neill all to myself (but not in the Summer of '42 way I no doubt wished for), I told her that she looked like a knockout. She reacted in an "Oh-ho-ho" sort of way, with her elegant smile. What a sweetheart. Took some fishing around, but these absolutely incongruent photos of the innocent "Lois Neill" firing such a heavy weapon is from the Adventures of Superman's "Jimmy Olsen, Boy Editor" episode, from 1954. According to a user's comment from the relevant IMDb page, apparently a criminal and his gang paid a visit to the Daily Planet, and somehow Lois Lane wrested this tommy gun away, and started spraying bullets all over the joint. I do have the autograph she signed for me somewhere, although I have no idea where. Since I hate the idea of autographs, I must have been pretty impressed with the lady, to have asked for hers. (I also have an autograph of Stan Gottlieb, who played — as I see now from his IMDb credit — 'Pop' Meyerhoff, the elderly gang member posing as a security guard, from 1971's The Anderson Tapes. These are the only two "celebrity" autographs I own, and I don't know where they are. I wonder how much the Gottlieb autograph would fetch these days; maybe a pretty penny? If I'm lucky, maybe three pennies.) I see this thread has featured Ms. Neill's "cheesecake" photos from her studio heyday in the 1940s. It's kind of weird to see these shots, since I would not put her in the "sexy" category, but more in the "Donna Reed" type of "open-hearted and sweet and yet very beautiful" category. Looks like she had a nice long life, and it must have been thrilling for her to capitalize on a particular role that brought her so much attention and affection. Here she is in 2010, six years before she departed. I would like to believe Julius Caesar would have gotten a kick out of this post shedding an itty-bitty glimmer of light on Noel Neill. Please feel free to refer to it as Great Caesar's Post. . Last edited by nhy5; September 10th, 2021 at 02:32 AM.. Reason: Removed hyperlink. |
